...But what if the appendix has remained in humans for thousands upon thousands of years for a reason? What if your appendix helps sustain health? What if it is better to keep all your original parts -- including organs -- when possible, and that includes your appendix? There's growing evidence the appendix isn't just a useless piece of tissue. And new research is showing it could, in fact, play an important role in keeping the gastrointestinal tract healthy and the immune system strong.

Recently, scientists have found evidence the appendix may play a role in helping the immune system by maintaining internal flora found in the human gut known as symbiotic bacteria. These bacteria live in symbiosis (meaning they maintain a close ecological relationship) with other organisms in the digestive tract. For example, symbiotic bacteria may work together to help break down fiber containing foods and they may also help produce vitamins.

In a study published October 22nd in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology, researchers from the University of Arizona College of Medicine and Arizona State University concluded that the appendix does have a purpose. It is a highly specialized organ that has been maintained in mammalian evolution for 80 million years or more. The reason? To harbor symbiotic bacteria essential for health. The scientists call the appendix a kind of "safe-house for symbiotic gut microbes" that probably evolved to preserve health-protecting internal flora during times of gastrointestinal infection. "This function is potentially a selective force for the evolution and maintenance of the appendix, and provides an impetus for reassessment of the evolution of the appendix," the scientists stated.

the appendix plays a vital role in boosting up your immune system. a relatively weaker population today is the outcome of bad lifestyles, food, and yes- increased appendicitis operations!

appendicitis is easily curable through natural medicine. see here for remedies for getting your appendix back on track: Home Remedies for Appendicitis (http://www.ayurvediccure.com/home-remedies/appendicitis.htm) and Ayurvedic Remedies for Appendicitis (http://www.natural-homeremedies.org/homeremedies-appendicitis.htm)

if anyone here has had their appendix removed, let us know if you have been feeling weak post the operation, or if you've been falling sick.

do NOT remove your appendix; it is a very useful organ. if it is dis-eased, visit a naturopath and get the necessary treatment before you think of removing it.

Very informative, thank you for posting this. I recently had a discussion with a friend regarding the appendix. We both came to a simple conclusion that the organ was still there for a purpose, but weren't sure why. Thanks. :)

I've always wondered why a Creator/ Forces of Nature with create/ form useless organs.

I had my tonsils taken out because they were giving me pain when I was a child. I'm not sure if they are really useless either.

no they are not. i read somewhere that healthy tonsils can actually prevent diphtheria and protect you against infection; it's a very important part of the immune system. once you've cut them out, you can never get them back.. tonsils are organs which are of importance as far as detoxing the body and eliminating matter is concerned. removing them somehow hampers the rate of eliminating toxins- that's what i think. lymph circulation is of great importance, and the flow of lymph through the tonsils is one of the most important defensive mechanisms we have. the tonsils being an important part of the lymphatic system should actually be taken care of, not removed.

that said, i don't wanna scare you :D many people claim removing them is a lot better, but i personally feel otherwise.

anyway, i found a good write up about this on a blog: http://themiddlewaykcm.blogspot.com/2008/08/tonsils-are-far-from-useless-body-part.html

Korean Constitutional Medicine believes the tonsils are a very important part of your body and that they aid immeasurably in helping fight and prevent illness.

...the energies that help us sustain life are ground and sky energies. Most of these energies are taken in through the mouth (food) and nose (air). The tonsils lie in between these areas and our lower organs and serve as an inspection and investigation base for all of the incoming ground and sky energies. They let the good pass, fight against the bad and warn the other organs of incoming substances in which they will need to protect against.

Our bodies are constantly trying to fight off the enemy (germs and unwanted substances). They are in a constant war with the environment around them, fighting for your health and vitality.

if all this is true, then notice how the organs associated with immunity are being classified as 'junk' organs!
