Diet sodas cause kidney problems: Study
Tue, 03 Nov 2009 16:47:41 GMT

While diet sodas are gaining more popularity among individuals worried about their calorie intake, a new study finds these drinks are linked to kidney problems.

According to the study presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Nephrology in San Diego, drinking two or more diet sodas per day doubles the risk of developing impaired kidney function.

A 30 percent drop was reported in the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), an index determining the function of the kidneys, of women who drank two or more artificially sweetened sodas per day.

"Thirty percent is considered significant,'' said lead researcher Julie Lin, adding that natural aging is associated with only 1 mL per minute per year decline in GFR.

Drinking less than two sodas a day, however, does not affect kidney function in these women.

Scientists added that high salt intake is also associated with a faster decline in kidney function.

That's interesting, but they don't specificy which sweetner. Hmm.

Edit --

Found this (http://www.asn-online.org/press/Renal%20Week-09/3a-Lin%20release.pdf) but it doesn't specify either. I'd love to think it doesn't matter which, but it would have to.

I can't see how people can subject themselves to drinking this stuff as it tastes really bad. I don't know anyone who drinks this stuff drinks it for the taste. Also it has been widely known for years that both saccarine and aspartame can cause ill effects on the body over time.

Knowing this, why would anyone drink this stuff?

Instead, if one wants a low calorie beverage, why not just drink plain bottled water. You can spice it up with lemon juice. Besides water quenches the thirst while diet drinks dehydrate you.

I think a lot of food preferences have to do with behavior and culture more than taste. Not to mention how you might feel about say, the media's role in pushing unhealthy food. There are a LOT of popular food items that just taste terrible without a LOT of doctoring -- coffee and chocolate come to mind.

Dude you seriously need to stop drinking that shit, you have no idea how dangerous and bad for you it really is. If you keep that up headaches will be the least of your worries.

I highly suggest you take the time to watch this documentary.
