The BBC has launched a new service to allow the public to see UK democracy in action with live and on-demand footage from numerous political institutions inline and in one place.

A new iPlayer-style site allows users to access a video wall with coverage of bodies such as the House Of Commons, national assemblies and the European Parliament, with debates and committee hearings.

The BBC claims Democracy Live is the first of its kind in the world.

The player, at bbc.co.uk/democracylive, will cover proceedings in the House of Commons, House of Lords, Scottish Parliament, Northern Ireland Assembly, Welsh Assembly and full sittings of the European Parliament.

It will also include historic moments from notable political events over the past two decades.

Head of BBC Political Programmes, Sue Inglish, said: "Democracy Live is an important addition to the way the BBC brings politics to our audiences across the UK, allowing people to see first hand the work of their elected representatives and ensuring we have a healthy and informed democracy.

"This is precisely the sort of different content the BBC should be providing in fulfilling our public service remit and representing all of the democratic institutions in the UK."

Users can search for particular words which may have featured in particular debates using an innovative "speech-to-text" system, which allows them to go directly to the relevant part of the footage.

In addition, Democracy Live brings together the BBC's main political blogs and offers a forum for public figures to write about topical issues. The first is by House of Commons Speaker John Bercow who discusses Commons reform.

The name is kinda catchy, wonder if they know what it means?
