Here in Ottawa i've noticed more and more police are wearing military style camouflage pants. Quite a noticeable increase over the last few years. Anyone else notice this in their areas? Are they gradually trying to blur the lines between police and military in the anticipation of the military roaming the streets shorty?

Maybe. But don't call me Shorty.

I thought it was quite common for SWAT police to use both black and camo uniforms.

Why would they need to do such a thing before the military went on the street? if the military were going to do something then they would not require the police to start wearing camo uniforms

I'm not talking about SWAT police. I'm talking about regular police.

So why would there be a need for police to wear such items prior to some military deployment?

Have you got any pics?

I don't know...that's what i'm asking. I'm wondering if this is a conscious effort to blur the lines between miliitary personnel and police. Get people used to seeing people wearing military style clothing policing them. Then eventually it will be full fledged military.

No I don't have any pics...this is just something i've been noticing alot here in Ottawa when i'm driving around. I'll try to take some pics next time.

Personally I would say no. Some countries have paramilitary police, such as in France and Italy and these have been around for a long time so unless Canada is going along that line I cant see the need for such a blurring of roes. Police and military have totally different jobs.

The police are there to enforce law within a countries borders. The police are meant to act against criminals and the armed forces are trained to act against foreign armed forces. They have different roles and I cannot see any need for there jobs to be combined or for the distinction to be blurred. That would mean giving soldiers police powers, which they do not have. They also dont get the same legal training as the police.

maybe you should approach one of them and ask why they wear those pants. It might be for a purely practical reason. Do police there carry weapons? maybe they wear such stuff for range days to keep their normal uniform clean.

Canada does not have a paramilitary force. And yes...police and military do have different jobs as they should but we have seen and heard reports of martial law inforcement potentially coming soon in the face of another false flag operation (maybe this swine flu scare) or perhaps the collapsing economy. What i'm saying is that perhaps the government is slowly trying to get people used to seeing people in military style clothing policing them. It's been a very noticeable increase here in Ottawa.

I've thought of doing that. I will the next time I see one and i'm not driving by in my car. There can be no practical reason that I can see. Normal police pants are fully equipped to store weapons, ammunition radios and non-lethal weapons. I will ask them if they are told to wear this style clothing or if its their choice. If he/she tells me its their choice I will urge them to go back to their regular clothing. The uniform of a police officer is one of great tradition here in Canada and conveys a sense of justice and protection. Military clothing should not be worn by these civil servants in my opinion.

I agree that military clothing should not be worn by police. I know SWAT police sometimes use it but they may work in areas where camo works better than black. The way I see it, if martial law was going to be declared then I still can see absolutely no reason why the police would be dressed like that. If they wanted people to get used to troops on the street then you would think they might start doing military exercises in those areas. This would be the best way as troops would get used to the area they are going to operate in and the locals would get used to them being there. They could easily justify an exercise on the grounds of reaction to a terror threat or something.
