Farmers' leaders say "unsustainable low prices" in supermarkets had forced many dairy farmers out of business, leading to a shortage in supplies.

It means milk is now more expensive than petrol in some areas of Scotland, with whole milk on sale for the equivalent of £1 a litre at the WHSmith in Edinburgh's Waverley station yesterday.

you have to be inventive.i'm lucky, my mum and sister in law are vegetarians, so we eat a lot of organic veg/indian vegetarian curries eg lentils, chickpeas, paneer etc. if not get regular veg, wash it, olive oil and get pasta. if you plan your shopping/menu you can pick up good food. the processed food, ready meals are more expensive. its takes 20mins to make a good meal, which is what a procesed meal takes in the oven. where one is requiring attention, the other is just dropped in the oven and picked up later.

cooking should be fun, put the radio on, have a glass of wine/beer while you cook, time goes quick. i was watching that nigella last night, she got that vibe.

I wondered why bush seemed to be supporting pushing the bio fuel system it didnt make sense till now you cant deisel it seems we would rather use our cars to go shopping even if theres no food in them when we get there.

Support your local farmers market!

American Appetite for Ethanol Driving Up Mexican Tortilla Prices
Corn tortillas, the chief source of calories for 50 million of Mexico's poorest people, doubled in price last year mainly because our nation's farmers are converting their crops from food to energy production....

this interview with masanobu fukuoka is very enlightening:

Greening The Desert
Masanobu Fukuoka is another of the major pioneers of sustainable agriculture who came to the 2nd International Permaculture Conference. We spoke with him a few days before the conference while he was visiting the Abundant Life Seed Foundation in Port Townsend, Washington.

When I lived in the country, midnight potato picking was a hobby of the poor, allegedly. Midnight cow milking is a non-starter.

We are just going to have to form food co-ops.

Too many farms = over supply of product. It's that simple. Prices are driven down because someone somewhere is willing to go cheaper to compete.

People need to wakeup to the fact that farms are family businesses running on subsidies and are not competing. How many farmers do you know decided only to be farmers recentely and bought into a farm? How many non-white farmers exist in the UK? Farms don't have a right to survive. They have the right to compete as a normal business would and we don't need too many farms. You don't see many asian or black traditional farmers do you?

Most of them are in Asia or Africa. Purchasing enough land in America to own and operate a profitable farm is out of the question for most mere mortals.

People used to crawl the railway tracks for Coal, in the days of Steam Engines. Maybe the modern eqivalent is jacking into Power Lines.

Not sure what country you are in, but its not that here. Its Supermarket monopoly buying power and idiot comsumers thats the main problem. EU subsidies and Political failings add to the mix.

I am talking about the UK.

The UK has the blandest ranges of supermarket food in the world. Although Sweden aint much better either.
