The Dangers of Colonic Irrigation
Colon cleansing for good health traces way back to the ancient Egyptians, with records of their use of enemas (cleansing of part of the colon) dating back to between 15th and 17th century BC. Colon hydrotherapy -- the practice of flushing water through the entire colon or large intestine -- was all the rage in Europe in the late 1800s and early 1900s and was popular in the US in the 1920s and 1930s... and recently has increased in popularity once again. Then and now, the theory behind "colonics" or colonic irrigation was the cleaner the colon is kept from toxins and waste, the less opportunity there is for disease to develop.
But this is not the case. In fact, it couldn't be more incorrect, says Daily Health News contributing editor and digestion expert Andrew L. Rubman, ND. "The truth is that colonic irrigation can be harmful, and the unscrupulous hucksters who regularly tout its virtues on the Internet are, by and large, out to make a fast buck," says Dr. Rubman. While Dr. Rubman is normally open-minded about many sorts of traditional treatments, this is one he feels strongly he must warn people about. He outlined for me why colonics are harmful to digestion and dangerous to your overall health.
HOW COLONIC IRRIGATION WORKS... AND WHY IT DOESN'T
On-line and in many alternative health publications, colonic irrigation is heralded as the solution to problems ranging from constipation to weight loss, skin problems, arthritis, asthma and chronic fatigue. It is likened to a super-enema, even a "carwash" for the large intestine. In the procedure, a plastic or rubber tube is passed through the rectum into the colon, and large amounts of warm water are pumped in to flush the contents out and remove buildup from the large intestine. Proponents claim that colonic irrigation works by boosting immunity through the removal of accumulated toxins.
But, says Dr. Rubman, it's important to understand that "cleaning out" the colon is counter-productive because proper digestive function depends upon a colony of friendly bacteria (approximately three to four pounds worth in a healthy adult) that lives in a delicate state of balance in the large intestine. In fact, Dr. Rubman refers to the large intestine as the body's "disease-fighting control center" since its role in immune function is so important to our health. The beneficial bacteria in residence keep intestinal walls healthy and intact, working together to prevent dangerous bacteria in what we eat (and the toxins that they produce) from leaking out of the intestine and migrating elsewhere to cause inflammation and disease. By flushing out these helpful bacteria, colonic irrigation interferes with efficient digestion and immune function.
WHY IT'S SO DANGEROUS
In addition to not being helpful, Dr. Rubman outlined very specific hazards relating to colonic irrigation:
Disruption of normal balances. The colon normally absorbs water and sodium to maintain a proper balance of fluid and electrolytes. When colonic irrigation disturbs this balance, dangerous, sometimes even life-threatening salt loss and dehydration can follow.
Introduction of contaminants. Colonic irrigation can also introduce contaminants via equipment that's not properly sanitized.
Unqualified practitioners can cause serious injury. While regulations vary from one state to another, few require certification or licensure, so colonics are sometimes performed by individuals with little or no formal training or medical qualifications. According to Dr. Rubman, having a colonic irrigation at the hands of an unskilled practitioner is akin to having an intravenous (IV) drip administered by a person with no training -- it's hit or miss. One improperly executed colonic can cause serious damage, such as a perforated colon.
High cost. To add insult to injury, the potential risks and dangers of colonic irrigation come "hand-in-hand" with a steep price. A brief on-line search reveals price tags ranging approximately $100 to $800 (the latter figure for a series of multiple treatments).
HERE'S THE SAFE WAY TO ENSURE OPTIMAL COLON HEALTH
What is correct about the health claims of the colonics movement is that the health of the large intestine is essential to our well-being, even if colonic cleansing is the wrong way to achieve this goal. Dr. Rubman points out that the place to start is at the other end of the body, by eating healthy foods. In other words, for optimal digestion, follow an optimal diet.
If you regularly consume large quantities of difficult-to-digest saturated fat and red meat, you'll likely suffer intestinal disturbances. For optimal digestion, eat lean proteins including skinless turkey or chicken breast... healthy fats from foods such as olive oil, avocado and wild, cold-water fish like salmon and mackerel... foods that boost intestinal health, such as nutrient-packed, fiber-rich steamed veggies, fruits, bran, beans, nuts and seeds. In particular, fiber helps food move efficiently through the digestive tract, and binds and transports cholesterol-rich bile acids out of the body.
Other tried and true tips from Dr. Rubman...
Pay attention to salt intake. Sodium is an important mineral that helps regulate the body's fluid balance. Don't assume it's best to consume as little as possible. Instead, discuss proper salt intake levels with your physician.
Drink to satisfy thirst. Water needs vary among individuals and Dr. Rubman disagrees with the often-cited recommendation that we all need to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily. Again, when in doubt, consult your physician about proper intake levels.
Chew food thoroughly. The more you break down food in your mouth, the less work the rest of the digestive system has to do.
Dr. Rubman acknowledges that on rare occasions, depending on a person's individual digestive issues, colonic irrigation by a highly trained health-care professional may serve a valid medical purpose. In that case, however, it should only be performed by an experienced, skilled medical professional such as a naturopathic doctor (ND). To locate an ND in your area, visit the Web site of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) at

Andrew L. Rubman, ND, director, Southbury Clinic for Traditional Medicines, Southbury, Connecticut. Hi Lime,I have been doing it for over 25 years, and it definitely works for me. I look younger after an extended juice fast and cleanse, but I replace the beneficial flora inside also! But I have also been vegetarian for that length of time also, so I don't have any meat rotting in my colon, either! I have healthy skin also from cleansing.Read the testimonials on Dr. Gabriel Cousens website. It is nothing short of miraculous!!! http://www.treeoflife.nu/

Hehe :D Nice post.
I wouldnt want to try a colon cleansing even if it is healthy. Guess I might just be a bit... embarrashed about anyone getting near that part of my body. I usually stay away from doctors of any kind unless there is no other way. I might regret that some day :o
As for the cleansing being healthy... I believe it might be healthy doing it, if you then keep doing it as well. After getting one done though, I do believe that the natural bacterial defense in that area will simply be weakened. Not having much to do, the bacteria become lazy, and ineffective. That is how I view all of our immune system. If we simply try to avoid everything, then it seems more likely to me that something will find a weak spot.
I have faith in my body to keep me healthy, and I like my food to be as natural as possible. I like salt and sugar even though we hear so much about how it makes us fat. Its like American diets... do not eat salt, sugar or anything with fiber in it. Never mind that fiber is one of the most important things in the food pyramid. Just as long as they can eat food with too much fat in it, then it is all okay. Fat is of course also very important for us, but these days the trend does not seem to be about making a healthy balance for our body, but how to have an unhealthy balance and still look good.
You do not like to run or do other kinds of physical exercise? Then simply eat less, that is how you loose weight without having to work for it. Go several weeks eating like a mouse a rabbit, and you will loose weight and look like a model... only downside is the hunger that builds up for when the diet is over. The imbalance such a diet makes have proven again and again to simply backfire in the long run. A few have succeeded and they then tell others to try the same.
Seems to me that if you follow the "weight watchers" program, then it ought to be one of the most effective and healthy diets. I havent tried it though, since I do not really care all that much about my own health ;)
Could it be that eating lots of fruit might have the same effect as a colon cleaning? Like plumes or something.

Reminds me of my first schoolyears were we experimented with making a water rocket. Empty sodaplastic bottle + highpressure water pump, and you can make the bottle fly up in the air like a rocket :P Doesnt fly that high, but still quite funny. I found the best way to clean out the pipes is to use a product that goes under many names like Oxy Moxy or Oxy plus.
It is "stablised electrolytes of oxygen in a chlorate solution"
It kills the anerobic bugs and enlivens the areobic (good) ones.
A 250 ml bottle will last a couple months and do the trick.
Start day one..... add 5 drops in a glass of clean water. take 3 times a day. One hour after a meal
Day two ... add 6 drops on a glass of clean water take 3 times a day
Day 4 add 7 drops etc
Maximum recommended rate is 25 drops 3 times a day.
I took up to 50 drops 3 times a day.
for the first couple weeks your feaces will go through the eye of a needle at 10 paces.... carry a spare pair of knickers and dont fart unless sitting on the can.
After a couple weeks your poo will be soft and easy to push out.
All the crap that colonics is supposed to do this will do over a month or 2. Only better.

An expert guest on the Nutrimedical show said that vast amounts of toxics gather in the intestines.
My non-expert guess is that if the blood flow is made well-functioning in the intestines and the nerve cells fully developed and activated, then that would make the intestines healthy and they would be able to flush out all the toxins by themselves.

I've always considered them pointless. The Hay System book I have, whilst good, puts rather too much emphasis on them for my liking, despite advocating being as natural as possible. Colonics aren't natural.
Gillian McKeith also loves them, but then she probably just has a scat fetish.

I had a go yesterday even though I think they're dangerous. I did it because I know my digestion sucks. It sucks because I my body likes veg etc but I don't get to eat it because I don't get to choose what I eat at work and to a lesser extent with friends. I planned to electrolyte rebalance with a surf, and redo the bacteria with Kefir and stuff.
Here's what happened:
1) A 40 minute wait of filling and crapping. Only a bit of brown.
2) Then, suddenly, loads of crap; ~20mins
3) Then, once that cleared the mucus. Lighter brown stuff.
4) Then, and I didn't expect this. Light yellow stuff. This was a bit wierd because up until then the water had been mostly clear with brown bits. I could feel some organs kicking out this yellow stuff.
Was a bit tiring but seemed good.
5) Next came Orange stuff. This felt more like it was coming from the liver area.
After all this I walked away without a problem. And that's bearing in mind last year I was shitting blood! I really shouldn't have done it but it was fine. It felt dangerous. But it depends on lots of things; clean environment, dexerous ass hole, replacing the good stuff you've cleared.
Sure in some cases you're clearing out an already good system. But for people who have a crappy ass fauna (nearly everyone these days cos eating meat more than once a month is probably too much and most people do that every day) it's a clean slate.
I wouldn't recommend it to others because it takes a lot of thinking including knowledge about oneself.
However, I only had a basic flush. Like the french and thier suppositories I'd imagine this is a much better way to administer things than though the mouth. In fact, perhaps we might all never eat again and just have nutrients shoved up our jaxies like robots plugging into the wall.

You should really introduce yourself in not so much detail, but since you have went into a lot, welcome, now how does just a normal flush reach the large/ small intestines. I have just ordered some of that oxy powder stuff as I want to have a good clear-out, well after 50 years I reckon it's about time I give it a go. I will let you al know how I get on later. http://www.comicguide.net/images/smilies/mini_bomb.gif
