View Full Version : Water drinking contest death!

The family of a woman who died after taking part in a water-drinking competition has been awarded $16m (£9.7m) in compensation.

Mother-of-three Jennifer Strange, 28, entered the California radio station contest to win a Nintendo Wii games console.

In the event - dubbed "Hold Your Wee For a Wii" - contestants had to drink a 250ml bottle of water every 15 minutes without urinating.

After eight rounds, contestants were given half-litre bottles.

Mrs Strange is believed to have downed nearly two gallons (7.5 litres) of fluid in the hope of winning the prize for her children.

She then left work early complaining of headaches, and was found dead later.

A post-mortem found she had died of water intoxication.

No criminal charges were filed in the case, but the woman's family sued Sacramento radio station KDND-FM for more than $34m.

After deliberating for two weeks, a jury awarded her husband and three children just less than half that amount.

Lawyers for the station argued that her death was unforeseeable, and her "contributory negligence" led in part to her death.

Ten of the radio station's employees were reportedly sacked after the event.

Experts say water intoxication can occur when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is altered by a rapid intake of water.

This can eventually cause the brain to swell, stopping it regulating vital functions such as breathing.

Maybe from the fluoride?

It's not from damn fluoride. You can die from too much water in you body, go learn about it before you start pointing the finger at fluoride.
I know all about the effects of fluoride but damn, sometimes you need to get your head our the sand and realise it's not to blame for every death brought about from too much water intake.

You could quite easily have gave the information without the "fluoride" comment.
Sorry, but it starts to grate on me when people start pointing fingers or even suggesting things that clearly are not the case. It's obvious why this person died, too much water. The level of fluoride if any in the water is irrelevant.

from what I remember, large amounts of water intake without electrolytes to accompany it can lead to the brain swelling up until death... not a fun way to go

Ooops!! They should have known better than to run a competition like that! :s Our cells don't have a cell wall to cope with large amounts of water, we've only got a cell membrane which will burst when the pressure builds. This is why some people die when they take E because they get really thirsty, drink too too much!

Not completely daft to assume it might be fluoride though. Ease up ya'll.

Hah! I just came from a blog about this story. I'll just C&P my 2 cents.

Jeez! No such thing as self responsibility is there? Hasn't been since the 70's that I remember - it's always somebody else's fault. What a crock. That family KNOWS that money will not bring back their dear departed one who, of her own volition, drank herself to death. She elected to participate in the contest for a foolish piece of junk that is a want not a need. I'm sure her family, who has hit the big jackpot now, will be able to afford all sorts of useless junk now.

Any way back on thread. There was a thread on here yesterday about some fella that died from drinking 6 pints of water. I'll see if I can find it and link it.

found it

Who knows? Maybe the lady had underlying issues unknown? Much the same as when a person (of his own free will) rides a roller coaster and codes out. Autopsy shows the person had an unknown health issue yet the family sues the park nonetheless and wins.

I agree with Neutrino.

People on this forum are too quick to tag everything as a conspiracy, not just this post but many other posts on here.

Drinking that much water is pure stupidity, your body is a well balanced machine, too much of anything will upset the balance.

Doesn't matter if its pure H20. :D

...would you not agree that it is simple greed and consumerism which makes a woman risk her life for a fucking wii
...I view all these sad sheep on game shows as greedy little wannabees who will often lower themselves to the depths for a pathetic prize!
...and if she didn't know that drinking that amount of water is dangerous (as is any blatant over-indulgence) I guess she was just dumb ...however, I do feel sad for her children and husband in this

Well,

First off, the woman who participated in this contest did so from her own will. The people running the contest were dj's doing a game for entertainment. Both parties were just ill informed about diluting the chemicals in your brain to the point of malfunction. Too call them both greedy is a lazy assumption.

Many people are looking for entertainment and joy in their lives. Though this is a problem in society, to the point of ignoring other matters, it is just looking for some fun and happiness. She was not greedy for objects, she was desperate for stimulation. Thats what i think this whole situation was basically.

As far as the family suing, desperation. I never understood how people can be angry at desperation. It seems counter productive and hipocritical.

This thread is making me think of the Today's News thread in the general forum.lol.:p

If water get inside the lungs, stuff could happen inside the body similar to what happens when drowning... Of course this could be deadly.
