Celebrities playing Lucifer?

Celebrities turning on Christmas lights in UK (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford_Street#Celebrities_who_turned_on_the_Christ mas_lights)

Not being from the UK I'd never heard about this tradition. Why do they do this, what's the rationale?

Is it like when a celebrity opens something, like a new building and this time it's the Christmas shopping season? Celebrity endorsement? Playing Lucifer?

Oxford st is a huge centre for shopping in London, so they get celebs to turn on a bunch of X-mas lights and people actually turn up to watch said celebrity do this. Who knows why they turn on lights, presumabley to spread the christmas cheer and get people buying more shit.

They also do it in smaller towns and cities, but obviously the celebrity comes from lower stock if they're tunring on lights in Stockton on Tees for example. Ex reality tv stars do it.
