Technically I'm a "vehicle refinishing technition" spray painter to be simple.
I would say I use more of the thinking that i learned from the trade than the actual trade skills therself.

Yes ------engineeering , building , creation , fire making , many crafts really .
It is surprising actually how many of the survivalists have many crafts and yet they are not aware of them .

This may not count but i can a fruit pastel in my mouth without chewing it!!:D

Im a working artist i suppose this is more relevant, painting, pyrography, carving, calligraphy, sculpture usually arty rubbish, it all helps to expand creative thinking in whatever field is relevant at the time.

I'm a dab hand at carpentry, built all the wardrobes, tables, staircase, shelves in ma house myself. Probably make anything wood related. Love the smell of it as well.:D

My father is a carpenter/joiner by trade, retired now, he taught me all he knows. He's the most skilled person I know with his hands, made some stunning pieces over the years. Sadly suffers from rhematoid arthritis, occupational hazard.

Makes my day to see such dedication in action, its like nature where one follows another at a pace that is self satisfying, food for the mind to make food for the body.

Keep em coming, no matter how small you think it is,

Just following family tradition. My grandad was a carpenter and his dad and so forth. In fact most of my family on my fathers side are all in the building trade.

I'm a software engineer by trade but always like getting my hands dirty, service my car and my girlfriends car myself and any other bits and bobs that need doing to a car.

I also collect and restore vintage hi-fi, I don't know if that is an old skill, but we'll always need music right?:D

My dad still scoffs at my efforts, especially when I dig out the power tools, as he would say 'In my day we used hand tools, and only hand tools.'
He does have 45 yrs of experience so its quite obvious he's gonna be more skilled than I am.

These oldies are tough mofos, built em to last back in the day.
If it came down to it I would quite happily live off the land and say goodbye to the creature comforts.

I think you myself and thousands of others are now thinking this on a regular basis, as we get more mechanised and modern, we are in real danger of loosing our scense of community and if we are not careful could loose many vital skills altogether, this is why I encourage doing things and learning new skills and aquiring similar attitudes which are going to be needed in the not so distant future, that I am sure about.

One other hobby which is slowly turning into a possible passtime and secured traditional trade, is that of wheelwrighting, I have been lucky to have been taken under the wing of retired master wheelwright Michael Collishaw of Newark in the Uk, now in his mid 70's he has been an inspiration to myself in doing things the old way using the older tolls which I now have, including a very rare boxing engine donated by a local museum,

At 50 I am fast running out long term of time and always looking for new student for my traditional skills programs, locals get free tuition, others donate towards their keep, I'm on my 12th international student in the musical instruments and just venturing into the shoe making and still under instruction in this trade after 3 years now, but able to teach most of its different stages and learning every day.

I can relate with your farther about the older hand tools as I use them myself together with electrical also, most of the older machines are like the new ones but power with water or turbine, a great venue but sadly used to its potential is Gayle Mill in Wensleydale, with all its original workings including 1920's turbine.

One thing often said by the older people is, not sharing ones own knowledge when you are able is showing ones own insecurities.

How "old" is old?

I've designed residential homes since 1980. I specialize in log homes, straw-bale homes and cob homes. Green homes I think it's referred to.
I design and sew clothing by hand; did it for my kids back in the day. Can make anything, including quilts. Love to sew; have a machine, but know how in case of no electricity.
Bake from scratch all manner of goodies, including homemade bread twice a week, cinnamon rolls, yeast rolls, pies, cakes, cookies, brownies, etc. I love to cook and bake from scratch.
Love to can also. This year I grew my veggie garden and canned all veggies, making salsa, catsup and marinara sauce from the Heirloom tomatoes. Yum! :D
I can make paper out of anything; candles. I make herbal tinctures and have fresh, dried herbs available for any use.
I have many survival skills, like camping and setting up in the wild; how-to set up an emergency shelter. How to make a fire with what you have and then cook on it. How to defend yourself from wildlife, etc.
I always carry a knife for any use. Good to be prepared; and a flashlight, rope, scissors, duct tape, etc. You never know. I also have a wind-up radio, needs no batteries or electricity.
The list goes on, but I think you get it.

I'm a chippy and like to where possible use old joinery in heavy timber frame but not all want to do that so its not possible to build like that all time but I have the knowledge now and skills and tools so wherever I can I will join timber to timber with a nice mortise and tenon joint. I need working with fire and leather and I'd almost have a set of victorian England village skills.:)

sounds like you are quite a active person who passes on valuable trade skills .
its nice to know .
sometimes I watch DVDs about old crafts / how the old farmers worked etc .
its all very interesting really .

we certainly are loosing touch with skill these days , only few keep it going .
if we stop it , we are placing mankind in danger of extinction really because these old trades etc are what helped mankind servive many things .

say good bye to them and say good bye to mankind is my view.

I'm a trained locksmith. Part of the NNAL.

Rim cylinders, Euro cylinders, mortice locks, wafer locks, etc.

If I could afford tools I'd go into business and quit the job I am in.
