Forgive my naivety here but why are we required (by statute) to insure a car instead of the driver?

Surely the car cannot cause loss or harm to someone, only the driver of the car can.

Also, someone with a legal dictionary may be able to help but what is the legal definition (in the UK) of a car? I'm imagining it contains the term vehicle.

BTW - this wasn't set up to discuss the difference between a car (vehicle) and a private conveyance as this is discussed in various other threads. This is set up to discuss car versus driver when talking about insurance.

have a look at the cover ..... it's private !

whats that saying .......... are you driving in public or are you about private travel .. remember National Insurance is for public .. then to cloud your view even more they call the queens highway, our rights of way as public highways for thier statues and fix strict liability to impose thier fines.
Insurance is for if you do harm to others, so as long as you never crash....but when we do crash is it in public or private and do we already have full cover with our NI bond. Just think soon carbon tax crap will stop most from private means to travel with more third party looting....
