Its the Cthulhu Mythos which has come from of the works of H P Lovecraft and others that have developed the Mythos over the years.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cthulhu_Mythos

I put the thread in this forum and not the religous forum because the basis of this 'religion' is that there are intergalactic, interdimensional Elder Gods/Beings, 'The Old Ones' that lay sleeping in the underworld, R'Lyeh, waiting for the time they can awake and feast on the souls of humankind.
Cthulhu is oneof these creatures and sleeps in the bowls of the earth. See the movie Cloverfield for a light hearted monster romp that is loosley based on Cthulhu.

The Cult of Cthulhu are occult group that use ritual dedicated to waking the Old Ones and destroying reality as we know it.

From what I can gather, most people do not really believe the Elder Gods or the Deep Ones actually exist in the sense that a creature bigger than the biggest mountain, with tentacles for a face, a scaly body and the wings of a Dragon is asleep in the ocean.

But then, there is this:

There's a huge amount of info out there. The Mythos is very popular as are the works of H P Lovecraft, which is always the best place to start.
There is also the Necronomicon from which alot of this comes from, although it seems likely the Necronomicon is a work of fiction, possibly written by Lovecraft himself.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necronomicon
Its said that Lovecraft got alot of his ideas from dreams, he was plagued by horrific nightmares which he would use to influence his work.
Its worth looking into the life of Lovecraft as I think there was more going on than is generally considered. Lovecraft's wife, for a example, was once one of Aleister Crowley's lovers.
Its an interesting topic and has spawned a whole subculture of its own with many movies on the Subject, many other authors that help develop and carry on the Mythos, there's several games based on the Mythos and a whole load of Cthulhu Tshirts, mugs and statues etc that can be bought online.

I do wonder what the origin of The Bloop is. Whatever is down there is big. Really really big.
From wiki:

The Bloop is the name given to an ultra-low frequency and extremely powerful underwater sound detected by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration several times during the summer of 1997. The source of the sound remains unknown.
The sound, traced to somewhere around 50° S 100° W (South American southwest coast), was detected repeatedly by the Equatorial Pacific Ocean autonomous hydrophone array, which uses U.S. Navy equipment originally designed to detect Soviet submarines. According to the NOAA description, it "rises rapidly in frequency over about one minute and was of sufficient amplitude to be heard on multiple sensors, at a range of over 5,000 km." According to scientists who have studied the phenomenon it matches the audio profile of a living creature but there is no known animal that could have produced the sound. If the sound did come from an animal, it would reportedly have to be several times the size of the largest known animal on Earth, the Blue Whale.

There are a lot of tunnels and metal libraries in South America, they may connect with biger tunnels and metal libraries and so on until you get to immense cavern size chambers. We have no idea what those contain. Then again all you have to do is look at Olmec, Aztec and Inca imagery.

Wow. Were I American I might even join the religion. The only religion whose dogma I would somewhat gladly be willing to accept and follow.

They should join up with the Flying Spaguetti Monster.

Actually, I seem to remember that in the 2006 election, all across college campuses, kids chose Chthulu for President over Bush and... what was the other fool?

I wonder if elder gods have a sense of humour.
I am sure Dread Cthulhu will find the jokes funny. He will eat those that mock him first as we shall taste the sweetest.
