A US census worker found hanged from a tree had the word "fed" carved across his chest, an official has said.
The FBI is investigating whether Bill Sparkman, 51, who was also a teacher, was the victim of an anti-government attack.
Door-to-door census interviews have been suspended in Clay County, Kentucky, where his body was discovered in a remote forest.
His vehicle was found nearby with a computer he was using for work inside, census employees were told.
One of Mr Sparkman's teaching colleagues said he warned him to be careful when he took on census field work to earn extra money.
"Even though he was with the Census Bureau, sometimes people can view someone with any government agency as 'the government'," former policeman Gilbert Acciardo said.
The start of an insurgence against the US government or an excuse to start a crackdown?
