This is supposed to "prove" that adult level readers don't read using phonics, they use whole words. Which I tend to agree with. But there are many many reading specialist who insist otherwise.

It's not an either/or thing when it comes to how the brain operates with either phonetics or whole word learning. It's a mix of both. For learning to read, phonics really is the better way to go. From there, after enough exposure to reading and words, the brain then falls into the whole word approach, as demonstrated with the opening post example. It seems to be the same as when you learn a new task - once you get the hang of it you eventually can do it on autopilot, without thinking. But the way in which you learned the task initially makes all the difference in how fast you'll get to the point where you can then switch over to "autopilot." Hence, why I believe that phonics is the better way to learn how to read initially. I say that because I've met people who were taught the whole word approach and they had difficulty reading. When reading outloud they would get words wrong and fumble, and I always wondered "What the hell? Can't they read???" without knowing/understanding that they were taught how to read in a different way than I was. I was taught with phonics. And the difference was shocking. Whereas I took to reading, the people I've seen who were taught the whole word approach did not. I was taught at age 6 in first grade, with phonics, and within two weeks of learning the basics I was flying along, reading. I couldn't get enough. Phonics meant I could read anything - just sound it out. I can't even imagine how you would teach somebody to read with the whole word approach, with no emphasis on the phonetic sounds of the letters.  So bizarre.
The way to go seems to be with phonics. Then when the person gets good enough the brain naturally makes that switch into "autopilot" whole word approach.....
