Now, take it from me. Dwelling on the past can be a very very stressful, energy training, and depressing process. Once you've found out the truth about the past, give the knowledge to everyone you can, and let them decide from there. After that, be proud of the knowledge you now have, and have shared, and go learn more.
The fact is though, you should not feel sorry about the past, or guilty. Guilt is also an emotion "energy vampires" (fo lack of a better phrase) like to feed on. They want you to feel bad. but you shouldn't. Just forgive the ones that have done wrong, and pray/meditate/chant/dance whatever for the victims. For their past, present and future lives.
That's the only way to break the cycle of hate. Is to truly let of it, and learn to love it. No, don't love the war and the murder or even the family history you may not be "proud of". But love the fact that you can learn from it, and be able to make a better future with this fine example of what you shouldn't do in the future.
Peace, love, and so much more.
