I've been recording music for years and in a few bands. I have never entertained the idea of 'making it'. Even the bands I've been in didn't have names, we just hammer the tunes out in garages and sound proofed rooms. Basically I want nothing to do with 'the business' and never have. I've made a few albums ranging from acoustic folk with poem through to full on greasy blues garage garage stuff. The thought of dealing with all the arsehole in the music industry makes me puke, but the real reason I keep it private is becuase I dont want arseholes listening to my music and slapping me on the back telling me how much they 'get it' or love me. The albums I've make usually only get burned into about 10-20 copies and handed out to close friends / like minded people. Loads of people have heard it and said I should be doing more and making a living, but I like my job and I'm happy to keep it as a hobby. I had a full on rock and roll myspace page, but it just more muppetry, so I stripped it to nothing deleted everyone and started again, now its just one rough track at a time I throw up after rehersals fo my friends in the uk. Myspace is a waste of time, who cares if some stripper in texas think "dude you rock"

The music industry has done everything it can to ruin music. Its production / promotion / sale and supply. Look at the humilliation people degrade themselves with on reality pop shows, idiots.

space lizard 'you rock' and I'm not a stripper from texas. I'm a maori from the bush and i haven't heard your music, but man your words are enough. I've been doing the reckless garage thing since I was a teen and now I have teens who are pumping out some skew stuff, its great. I've never bandied to 'the industry' either, infact so much so that I don't even know how to record, if you wana hear me and my lot, you gotta come round on a friday night when Im tryna strum away the blues of the week. No moaning on about the horrid dickhead at work or who hasn't pick the friken towel up off the floor in our house, nah, just hard core jammin and by the time 2 hours has passed so has the blues of the week. I've been hounded to record and go further with my originals, but can't be fucked dealing with the 'holier than thou' 'look at me' dickheads of the industry, half of them are advertising human skin and the tattoos on them anyway. They use it to decoy away from their box songs and linear voices

But I'll tell you one thing I love playing live, especially when I can get the people laughing and dancing. It makes me happy.

Also if you are involved in music and you want to sell your music to others then you are automatically involved in the "music biz" wether or not you like the terminology... Its all about how you do this or go about it... Some music isnt worth keeping , pressing to vinyl, spreading, and some music is... And thats the stuff i wanna be involved with... I love music and will do everything i can to make the "biz" the way i want it, Mainly by not selling out to big timers or giving music away for free... Some people earn their living doing this, and until there is a drastic paradigm shift , i dont see giving out your hard earned nights and days for free as a viable alternative

maybe the pay off is in spiritual currency? I definitely want to make an album, but for my nga moko (descendants). I want them to say, yep that was our nan she was a rocker, yep she had a grey mohawk, and played a one string guitar and wrote a song with one note............LOL

I agree with you and space lizard to a certain degree... You guys are all about jamming out live which is great... But i dont live in your town , so the chance for me to hear you jam out is not as great as if you would just do a recording and release it (for free if you want)... so in that sense i dont agree with you

P.s. - Are you a true Rastafarian ( take the beliefs as holy) or just trying to look cool by saying JAH RASTAFARI???

Anyway, i think the way music is portrayed as a tangible, sexual, object nowadays has had a heavy hand in the downfall of music... MUSIC is not an image on a billboard saying "We are the shit" look at us we are wearing all Puma gear".... L A M E!

Music could benefit without the sexual stigma attatched for a while i think...

Well I cant say I want to just lock my self in a room and play music... I want loads of people to hear it and get off from it....

the negative thing I feel is that its hard to do that with out putting your soul in the hands of other people who are controlled by ego and the whole mind control of the business...

that being said it is changing and nothing will kill music...it will always find a way to work as its human nature... nowadays what you hear on the radio or see on TV is not necessarily what the people like.... most record companies now are not even making money from albums popular bands are living off advances..basically being held up on the stage by the Record companies... half of them probably still live at home with their folks!

but whats going on is now the companies are trying to include into there contracts that they have a right to a % of the bands live income.... greedy gits! ... this means I guess that live music will become very valid and good live bands will be required... but it also means the companies will try and get their greacy paws on that as well....

same old thing... its gona get allot worse and allot better at the same time...

music is a very powerfull medium its a shame that capitalism has got its mucky paws all over it and influenceing it.it has to be said tho that until the musicians take a stand against it this will continue.with the intenet many people are bypassing the big dogs like sony and self publishing and ok they dont make as much money...unless you are the artic monkeys but they do get their message across,on thier terms.as in all aspects of life ......our generation need to stand up and make the brave move of pioneering changes, real revolutions in attitude, little by little dance music has cracked it now its time for the rock musicians to pucker up,accept less and get on with the job in hand, and be prepared to actually work hard for a living.
many dance acts are rockstars in the weekend and work in banks in the week.
it is very possible to do the do without the suits if you can overcome the overwhelming greed that hits you the minuite you realise you got the talent.

In Australia, the fucking poker machines have ruined the live band scene, and the only people who get regular work are those affiliated with a label of have a bloody good booking agent. The best Aussie hip gop band I've heard called King Farhook, work bi monthly and sometimes travel a thousand Kms away just to work.....Record Labels have fucked the humble muso.

Maybe a few on here are too young to know who Eric Burdon is. He fronted a band called The Animals, they were ripped off big time by record companies. Then he fronted a band called WAR. They booted him out after making a name for themselves off of Eric Burdons fame.

Anyway I'm listening to a track right now that all truth seekers who love music should hear. when I'm feeling like shite this song is so uplifting it brings tears to my ears. Eric Burdon sang this song and its almost a prophecy about the shit we on earth are about to face.

seek the track out, WAR : THEY CAN'T TAKE AWAY OUR MUSIC

It will blow your head off!

Heres a song called : Spirit on youtube, just to illustrate what a cool bastard he is.
