London's West Minster University has mounted a photograph exhibition about the urban identity of the Persian Gulf region.

The event displays 300 pictures by Iranian photographer, Mohammad-Reza Javadi, which portray the architectural characteristics of 35 Iranian cities.

The exhibition also presents some 110 works by international photographers depicting the cultural and settlement identities of the cities located in the Persian Gulf region.

The show has been held as part of the Architecture, Settlement and Urban Identity of the Persian Gulf Region, a conference held on the occasion of the 2009 World Habitat Day.

"The displayed pictures focus on the themes of markets, societies and architecture of Persian Gulf cities," the exhibition's general secretary, Nasser Golzar, told IRIB.

"Persian Gulf's northern cities, which belong to Iran, still witness a close relationship between the people and the environment, but the southern cities located in Arab states, extensive constructions threaten the cultural, architectural and environmental identities of the region," he explained.

"Although getting more knowledge about the Persian Gulf gives a better understanding of Iranian history and identity, we should not forget that the region has an independent identity of its own. The Persian Gulf cities share many characteristics in their people's way of life and their culture, traditions and customs."
