Faced with their first major change in governance since World War 2, Japan’s new Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) ruled government is seeking to relieve long-standing grievances regarding the massive US military presence.


US bases (red) cover much of OkinawaBut the US ruled out holding any negotiations with the new government regarding its 60+ year long military presence, insisting they made all the agreements they need with the outgoing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

The DPJ is reportedly playing hardball now, however, threatening to kick the US military off the island of Okinawa, which is where the bulk of their presence is situated. The islanders have long complained about the major burden of tens of thousands of US soldiers occupying a large chunk of their island.

The LDP’s solution was to pay the US billions of dollars to relocate one of their bases. The DPJ however insists that if the US wants a sustainable alliance with Japan it will return to the bargaining table, and soon."

Well they should have their Islands back, they aren't a threat nowadays, it's just draining military resources. But i bet they don't want to leave as it's a great staging post for a strike at North Korea or worse China.

Japan should kick the USA out of there own country completely the USA are just bullie boys its abound time the rest of the world stick upfor itself.
Its like here in the UK the so called special relation we have with the USA is a load of rubbish the USA users Britian to legalize there wars Iraq/ Afsmackastan because we always have a spineless PM (Blair) who jumps when the USA tells him to if our PM grew a backbone and told the yanks where to go i wonder how many other countries would of supported the USA wars if the UK did not.

Considering all the things going around with Japan atm (this, as well as them not listening to America in terms of Economy) I wouldn't be surprised if they're completely against the USA government. *shrug*

What is not mentioned is the accusations of rape of their people by us troops. Just recently (you can google this) a sergeant stationed there Okinawa? is accused of raping a fourteen year old school girl. He is presently not allowed off base. Probably for his own protection. The civilian population is totally fed up it seems. There were lots of protests there not reported in the western media. If I come across the link again, I'll post it.

Could be untrue, who knows. What matters is that the civilian population there is angry and wants the soldiers gone. Maybe its a setup.
