but the situation is, the fires were so destructive this time, because of the high temperatures, the aridity and the strong winds that were changing directions every minute.

the worst enemy in this was the wind.. it would make fires behave like tornadoes close to the ground, no one could take position closely to throw water and the planes and helicopters were in some cases grounded for that matter.

first of all, there were not 43 fires, but a lot more, more than double.

we have already more than 80 people arrested and all cases investigated.

- a woman got arrested blamed for starting the biggest fire in Zaharo, while having a barbecue in the strong wind - definitely not a terrorist

- a couple of kids 11 and 12 year old got arrested for starting a fire

- young kids on a moped were seen throwing molotovs

- threatening calls were made to tv stations and authorities taking responsibility and threatening to start more fires

- other people, one of which was a volunteer forest fireman were seen trying to start a fire and got arrested

- another 72 year old man is arrested for the same reason and is being interrogated

- in many cases, the people arrested were foreigners. not from turkey, or any of the potential enemies. there are some people who even think that americans are behind this. no one knows, they only assume at this point.


i don't know if we ever get to the bottom of this, but the facts are as follow:

- we have a great fire fighting force that would be able to do much better job if conditions were even slightly better

- the forests were not protected and treated as they should. the fires could have started very simply, from a single spark. a cigarette thrown out of a car window, electric power cables going through the forests could short circuit because of the strong wind, garbage thrown into the woods by idiots could self combust because of the sun (empty bottles can become lenses), even other element can be set on fire for the same reasons

- most of the wild forests were pine trees. the pine cones when on fire, explode burning parts that can fly away several kilometers due to the wind

- there were no fire safety zones made as precaution in several cases and the spots where the fires were, were non accessible by ground forces

- still to this day, we have new fires almost every hour

- the fires were not many more than the previous years, but were more destructive because of the climate change

- other countries all around greece have had similar problems this particular summer. for example, at this moment turkey faces a big problem that is not so severe, that's why you don't see it as a headline

- there is a permanent human factor, which has been around forever and seems like it is never going to cease. the human greed. apart from carelessness and potential terrorism for disorganizing the system, it is the land stalkers who are feared the most. these people take advantage of some laws, to build inside what used to be forest areas and make lots of money for themselves. these last ones are of the worst kind of nature's enemy everywhere and should be dealt with very strictly


what is the political situation right now:

- political parties blame one another. the government says that it looks like organized crime, but the secret service is currently examining all the evidence and hasn't arrived to conclusion. it may take some time.

- the opposition is blaming the government for not dealing with the problem effectively. also for using the "conspiracy theories" as an alibi and thus degrading the whole country to the rest of the world, making it appear as a 9-11 scenario

- all political parties agreed to give the most money for their political campaigns to the restoration and compensation of the victims

- the political activities of this week were at the most part canceled or postponed. they claim that even their speeches were changed.

- the opposition is trying to create tension, to gain more votes in the upcoming elections

- the corporate tv networks are on a rampage blaming everything and everyone sounding hysterical beyond any limit

- even the ex king of greece has visited the disaster areas, viewed by many of the people there as a deus ex machina who could save them from what's going to happen next


what goes on to the "simple people's" minds:

we just can't take it anymore. this is one big chance for everyone to unite as one soul and work together. there is no need for more games. if this gets forgotten too easily, then it would be a disaster for the generations to come. if it is dealt with maturity and intelligence, a great change can start to manifest. citizens from all over the country organize to offer help of any kind: clothes and other materials, money, service, reforestation, healing and of course love and compassion. the greek citizens don't see any need to fear invisible enemies, we can handle anything like that. what we care about right now is the people and environment. we are even going to form patrols (we are thinking armed ones) to protect it since the politicians are incapable. more people are going to volunteer for public service for the environment, more people are going to care about it. winter is coming and there are going to be many changes. the first big rain can now easily turn into flood and destroy the remaining inhabitable areas. people need to think about that and take measures as soon as possible.
