Sad to see what we do too keep ourselves fed. I prefer not thinking about it. I try to buy food that is from animals that have had a somewhat good life, but even doing that, you can never be sure. I believe it is better to buy meat, which comes from animals that have had a good life, than it is to not eat any meat at all.
Trying to live a green life is not easy though, and I do not really go out of my way to get these kinds of food. I guess the super markets here are part of why I can even get those kinds of food, and when it comes to meat, the option for meat comming from animals that have been welltreated, seems nearly non-existant. I believe it has become impossible for us to produce enough meat for us all without letting animals meant for food live like this.
We could of course make closed, selv sustained societies, where we make all our food for ourselves, and then sit there and think the rest of the world to be stupid. That only solves the problem in our own small society though.
While some say that it is no issue at all that the human population on this planet, is growing exponentially, I do believe that it is something that will be a great problem for us. In the history of China and probably other parts of Asia, we have already seen what overpopulation can lead to. They might have found some kind of solution to it, but will we keep finding new ways of growing enough crops, and getting enough meat?
I do think that unless we begin finding new planets to live on within 500-1000 years, then we might be facing grusome events. I do not expect that we will be able stop exponentially growing in numbers, so what does happen might be that we will see more death more instead. Maybe this 2012 event will be something that can come with a solution to this. If we all became more aware of what is going on around us, instead of just thinking that TV, radio and so on is telling us all there is to know. The media is probably telling us all that we need to know, but it is not telling us more than that. Would seem stupid, and is really bad journalism ;)

Wow that was an important & eye opening documentary  I feel for the farmers too :( It's certainly made me think about my shopping habits, I'm gonna make more of an effort to buy from other sources rather than the supermarkets now.
Thanks for sharing Chris.

I bet some reptilian is looking at a video of how we humans live, and thinking:
"I'll feel better if I abduct humans who don't live all packed in cities..."

I didn't see the video but i am guessing "feeling for the farmers" has something to do with prices being driven down so low that noone can make a profit.
Growing up in the country I would like to add something about farmers.
Farming is a family business and the majority of farms seem to think it's their good given right to own farms all their lives and if it doesn't make any money then its the governments responsilibity to ensure they get a wage. What other kind of non governmental business gets so much in subsidies and benefits?
How many black farmers do you know in Britain? I am guessing not very many, which leads me to conclude that farming isn't a particularly easy industry to get into. No one seems to wake up one day and decide to become a farmer.
Why is it big supermarkets can drive down prices? Because we are over producing food. Too many eggs, too much milk etc etc etc. More food produce seems to be tipped away than is actual consumed in it's limited lifespan. There are far too many farms in the UK.
In the area where I lived there were a lot of very shrewd farmers who made fortunes out of sheep and cattle farming. mostly thanks to the generous benefits and tax breaks. One of the local farmers where I lived could afford to send all four of his girls to public school from the ages of 12 and up!
now we are made to feel guilty if we don't buy ecological milk and ecological eggs. You think farming in the UK was set up like Fair Trade.

Very good point. I have been wondering about that myself but I have no info on the subject.
I still feel for them, I certainly don't want to give them subsidies and I'm sure they don't want that either. Its just a bit screwed up the whole mess we are in.

Sheep farming is notorious in scotland for small holders and the like to buy useless stock and reap the subsidies and then not look after the sheep only for them to be slaughtered for no reason (the sheep are not sold for consumable sale).

Crazy...Would make a good documentary, especially if you add in Africa and their economic occupation.
