The US Secret Service is trying to identify the people who launched a Facebook poll asking whether US President Barack Obama should be assassinated.
Facebook on Monday shut down the user-generated poll, which was titled "Should Obama be killed?" and offered answer choices of yes, no, maybe, and "If he cuts my health care."
"Once we found out about it, we worked with Facebook to have it removed," Secret Service spokesman Malcolm Wiley said.
"We are certainly investigating; just like we would with any threat case."
More than 750 Facebook users had reportedly cast votes by the time the poll was taken down.
The poll was created over the weekend using a third-party application that lets users conduct their own surveys, according to Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt.
"People were usually doing trivial polls like asking friends where they should go for dinner or what they thought of a certain movie," Mr Schnitt said of the application.
"Then there was the offensive one created by an individual user."
Facebook had to shut down the program to get rid of the Obama poll since surveys using the software were controlled by the outside developer.
The application will remain disabled until the developer assures Facebook that the controversial survey has been removed and there are policies and procedures for handling such concerns in the future, according to Schnitt.
"Of course we are offended by the content of the poll but objectionable ideas are in the world and, unfortunately, manifest on Facebook," Mr Schnitt said.
"We felt we dealt with it in a responsible way by removing it as quick as we were notified."
Mr Schnitt declined to discuss the Secret Service investigation.

Good- We dont need asinine Polls like that. You just cant do shit like that.

I dont think ANYONE should be assassinated. Arrested? hell yeah. Tried by a Jury of his peers? Hell yeah.

Nobody has a rght to act as judge, Jury and Executioner and the Secret service is really just doing their job here. There are some real nutcases out there.

Pardon?

How is it a threat? yes it was a stupid poll and probably should not have been made but it's not a threat and there's certainly no need to find out who made it. It's just a stupid poll someone decided to start but who should have thought it through more thoroughly first before clicking enter.
I think the secret service need to spend their time and money on something more important, like perhaps a REAL threat.

The Secret Service is primarily there just to protect the prez.

They are obligated to look into this even if it doesn't amount to anything and they have to take this as a threat- Not saying I feel that anyone who made that poll was contemplating anything but thats what they are there to do- make sure.

Exactly, they probably set it up themselves as an excuse to pull the web. You can't fight fire with fire.

Nuts......... The notion that there's a hunt on for someone who started a Facebook poll like it would be difficult.

If they want to find out who started something like that. I suggest they begin their search at the Pentigon.

I agree with you guys - could well be just a set up. But let's not forget the stupidity of some folk. The stuff I've seen written of Facebook by some of my acquaintances leaves me highly disturbed: Suicide threats, death threats, illegal activities - you name it, it's all there. I decided some time back to withdraw from FB, it's not good for one's mental health.

I found this remark on a blog about this news story. It is in its entirety and unedited:

There are a number of schools of thought regarding the life of the President of the United States and there always are accept with this Presdinet becasue his weapon of mass destrction to the American people is FEAR, the single most powerful weapon of all.The Secret Sevice moniotrs hundrends if not thousands of mostly ilde conversation regarding all preceived danger to our Chief Executive. With all the stradegies available it is not out of the question that someone within the administration posted this poll on Face Book just to test the potential volitity of the face book participants. The bigger fear comes from the "unknown assailants" or those who p[otentially have the ability and resources to carry out such a cowardly act. There is no question Americans and the world in general seems to be becoming increadsing angry and dissatisified with the direction this administration is taking our country. He promosed change but people never dreamed the changes he had in mind or is putt...

The statute post was to convey the Fed's definition of a type of threat to the POTUS. We have our own opinions one way or the other.

Put the boot on the other foot for a moment...
Imagine the USA was actually the uSofA and the president was the kind of guy we could all relate to, that we liked and respected...

In such a scenario, and if I were head of National Security, I'd have operatives doing exactly the same thing.

Thing is...he's not very well liked, he doesn't have the respect of many and I, for one, can't relate to him.

This doesn't, and shouldn't, change basic security procedures.

Hell, imagine you were president...would you expect your security adviser to completely ignore it?

Gentlemen,

I never agreed or disagreed there was a threat to POTUS. I merely posted the statute regarding the issue. A fellow member questioned how such a poll could be considered threatening by the Fed and I posted the statute.

I apologize if I conveyed any impressions otherwise.
