WAILUKU - A Vietnam War veteran lost his house and was ordered to pay a $2,500 fine after police found 5 pounds of marijuana in the trunk of his car three years ago.
The veteran received an honorable discharge after serving one year in Vietnam, Covich had used alternative medicine to treat a medical condition, said Deputy Public Defender Adriel Menor.
"It's clear he's a tireless advocate for veterans," Menor said. "He's also a family man. He's close to not only his family but the families of these veterans he works for."
Tate said it might have been appropriate for Covich to experiment with marijuana after suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, but the amount of the drug seized by police exceeded amounts for personal use.

was reading state marijuana laws yesterday and found this statment in the mix...
Mandatory minimum sentence: When someone is convicted of an offense punishable by a mandatory minimum sentence, the judge must sentence the defendant to the mandatory minimum sentence or to a higher sentence. The judge has no power to sentence the defendant to less time than the mandatory minimum. A prisoner serving an MMS for a federal offense and for most state offenses will not be eligible for parole. Even peaceful marijuana smokers sentenced to "life MMS" must serve a life sentence with no chance of parole.

Yeah MMS these fuckers keep the jails full , and we all know who benifit's from this :). Not to mention no parole on a drug's charge in most cases. Well thats in america I guess there jail's/system is fucked.
Over here in the UK my mate got bail on top of bail(as far as i know he was still on bail for the prev one when this happened) , with 2 drug offences, one was a huge setup ffs lol.

Much of the prison system in America is controlled by corporations. The more people placed in prison, the more prisons they build and the more money they make. That's why you see so many people locked up for nonsense.
