Does anybody in here meditate? I'm thinking of doing a meditation course and wanted to know more about the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of meditation. Any information would be greatly appreciated...

Yup, download one of the many Alan Watts torrents, there are about 3gb of audios and they're all excellent. Possibly the most enlightened bloke I've ever heard (not the same person as the conspiracy bloke Alan Watt):

he's referring to mantak chia's books which u can get via ARES p2p or u can find a torrent

just look for Mantak Chia torrent. this is one style of medtation. and if ur into martial arts and esoteric/healing practises then mantak's ur dude. if u just wanna releave stress then just about any meditation should do that u just have to find the right one.

the purpose of meditation is ultimatley to achieve enlightenment buddhist/hindu (or immortality-taoist). the physical benefits are enourmous. i would recommend doing an active and sitting meditation.
if u are christian it might be a problem becoz meditate stimulates the energy centres of the body and many christians do not like this/it is not compatible with thier religion... so do some reasearch before u start, find out what it is you hope to achieve, what it is that particular mediation is supposed to do (coz there are heaps!) and then ask around and keep looking till you find a good teacher or even a gook book or video. i can give u some pointers if ur interested, i have been doing meditation for years-along the line of what mantak practises. the important thing is to find what's right for YOU!

"Meditation has no purpose, no objective," he says, "but to be entirely in the here and now - All memories and expectations exist now and now only, because now is what there is and all there is."

This experiential video captures Watts at his best when he extols laughter as the best form of meditation and, laughing heartily, urges his audience to participate.

Start off in the physical...diet, semen retention and relaxation...

Almost all meditations breeze over relaxation before going into their 'ultimate' mediation which they've wrote a few books on...But master the relaxation part, so you can at first relax enough to lay flat, then enough to be totally relaxed in the lotus position and then preyer...These are not stretches, the oldest teachings taught that the student should relax and not stretch at all. Relax every part of you, even your nose and top of your head...It's amazing where you tighten up.

After that, ask me again.

No one can or should do full lotus position, just starting out...

Get off the new age crack, dude.

He's right, diet is important. I haven't been meditating recently due to business but when I do it's more profound that any other times. I should really do it more to test it out...

inner smile (http://www.kheper.net/topics/meditation/inner_smile.htm)

whoa, i just found out that i've been choosing to do this stuff without even knowing about it! not only "secret smiling" at my inner body, but at everything.

and what's best about it, is that i don't currently feel that i need the "healing sounds".

it's funny hey! i noe what u mean. wheneva im stressed or under pressure i press on particular points on my fingers, iv done this for years. then about 7 months ago i downloaded a book on pressure point and found the point i had been pressing were to control emotions or i would persume emotional reaction (to my stress), spun me out, the taoists/buddhists certainly know their stuff

If Alan Watts is dead, who's legal rights could we possibly be violating? If this is illegal, then somebody somewhere needs a kick in the face.

illegal or legal, just a word and another rule. i dont really care. as long as the author/artist is not completely broke then torrents are all good by me.

"Torrents are illegal umkay" So's murder but it doesn't stop them does it. Information should be free, but there again so should most things in a freely traded barter system. If an author is broke and he knocks on my door I will be happy to feed, clothe and shelter them.

Get off the new age crack, dude.

Read what I said. First you need to lay down properly, this can even take months even longer. I said they were not stretches so if they were to them, they wouldn't be starting out with them. The idea of yoga is not to stretch but to let go.

New agers teach you to stretch ummmmmkay......

Yes I've been meditating for about 4 years now. To be honest meditation is the simplest and most potent thing out and this is from someone who's done almost every drug under the sun. From meditation it's possible to achieve similar sensations to cocaine and heroin though this won't happen straight away and may take several years. And to reach that stage permanantly you will have to give all drugs up. I've now reached the stage where I can just breathe through my nose for a few seconds and my conciousness will lift.

One downside to meditation is it increases your psychic sensitivity and this can cause you problems because in crowded places you can almost feel your energy being sapped. Also you begin to see through the 'illusion' alot more and things that you may have thought were good and ejoyable you'll start to see a darker side to them.

No for example I can't goto nightclubs because I feel to much negative energy in them where as a few years ago I use to live in them. Same thing with the after partys too. These negative energies are very, very subtle and 99% of people can't see them.

Another thing you'll find is that you might not need music, films and other 5 sense forms of esacpism as much. I don't listen to music as much as use to because I don't need the uplifting effect of music. In fact these forms of 'entertainment' tend to be pull me down rather than life me up. You'll also see how degenrate most music is and i'm not just refering to the mainstream stuff either.

But don't let any of this put you off. The positive effects far outweigh any negatives it's just that the positives are alot harder to clearly define because they aren't limited. Good Luck!

I've recently given up alcohol, as well as caffeine and all other drugs (weed, ecstacy, cocaine...) and I've made a conscious effort to eat a healthy, balanced diet for a while now. I've always felt that I was spiritually sensitive and recently I've been experiencing the 11:11 phenomenon a lot (last week I experienced it whilst reading about meditation!). Something tells me the time has come where I feel I need to pursue it more. The best way I can think of is to start meditating. Do you think this will help me to expand my spiritual awareness?

Sitting meditation is bad for you. And don't listen to hippie new agers. Hippies are satanic and will steal your stash and eat all your food.

yep i do chi gung or qi gong too. its great. i ALSO do sitting meditation which is not bad for me. i was in an awful mood yesterday and had pain throughout my body. i did a sitting meditation for about 20 mins. i was in a good mood until i had to return to work but the pain went away for the rest of the day, its about the body mind connection.

real hippies will not steal your stash and eat all your food but skippies will, they are losers who pose as hippies so people think they are peaceful and cool and let them at their stash and food.

ps winstonsmith, enough intellectualizing meditation.. just try it, regularly for best results :)
