If you look at comic book characters they are putting it in peoples faces, Superman's symbol is a snake and his only vulnerability is kryptonite(organite anyone?). Spiderman throws up the devil horns and has heightened senses. Batman is a Billionaire who lives a dark and secretive lifestyle and comes out of his cave(Blood drinking Khazar?). Incredible Hulk shapeshifts from a weak nerd to a green monster, there is plenty more occult themes to so called "childrens entertainment".
