What do you make of it?

It seems people have always travelled to other places for various reasons. One major factor for the immigration to America was because of religious persecusion in their native/birth countries, another was the lack of work, etc. In the example you bring up there does not seem to be any sinister reason for people moving to other parts of the world, like political issues or any apparant threat to their lives. More like they move away due to experiences and job opportunities available elsewhere.

Since glasnost more and more people from the former Soviet Union has arrived to Europe for the very same reasons.

People look to improve their quality of life, whatever that may mean to them.
For some it may mean more money. For some it may mean freedom of speech. For some it may mean escaping their past and reinventing themselves where nobody knows them and can judge them beforehand. For some it may mean expanding their horizons and learning more about other people.

In a world like ours, Corporate Planet, people within companies or certain professions often see the whole world as one; one big playing field and market. Their attitude is not rooted in nationalism or any such narrow sense of identity. That is what I have come to understand, anyway.
