Osama bin Laden has mocked President Barack Obama as unable to finish off the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and called him a pawn in the hands of American neoconservatives.
In a taped message posted online to "the American people", bin Laden claimed that the retention of figures from President George W Bush's inner circle, such as Robert Gates, the Defence Secretary, and Gen David Petraeus showed that Mr Obama was "powerless".
"Reasonable people know that Obama is a powerless man who will not be able to end the war as he promised, but rather, will continue it to the highest point possible," he said "The bitter truth is that the neoconservatives continue to cast their heavy shadows upon you."
The message has not yet been authenticated but it appeared on a website that has carried his words before.
It was posted on Sunday, two days after the eighth anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Bin Laden said they had been prompted by US support for Israel, and that a war of attrition on America would continue if that support, with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, did not end.
"Ask yourselves to determine your position: is your security, your blood, your children, your money, your jobs, your homes, your economy, and your reputation dearer to you than the security of the Israelis, their children and their economy?
"If you choose your security and cessation of war … this requires you to work to punish those on your side who play with our security."
