Widow, 85, murdered after burglar broke every bone in her face before stealing just £350

An 85-year-old widow was brutally murdered by a drunken thug who broke every bone in her face and robbed her of £350, a court heard yesterday.

Jobless Robert Tozer, 20, had recently been released from prison when he burgled retired teacher Joan Charlton, whom he had known as a neighbour since childhood.

He repeatedly assaulted her with a bottle in the living room before searching upstairs for cash.

Tozer came back downstairs to discover the injured pensioner trying to reach the phone in the hall to call for help and launched a merciless attack.

He stamped on her head, cut the phone line, deactivated the fire alarm and tried to set fire to her body despite knowing she was still alive.

A horrified friend discovered Mrs Charlton's body days later.

Yesterday Tozer pleaded guilty to murdering Mrs Charlton at her home in West Parade, Hull in June.

He was given a life sentence at Hull Crown Court and told he would serve a minimum of 22 years behind bars.

Judge Michael Mettyear told Tozer he targetted the elderly woman's house because it offered 'rich pickings' and he subjected her to a 'systematic and merciless stream of violence.'

'Her injuries, particularly her facial injuries were horrific,' he said. 'It is chilling to think of the pain and anguish she must have suffered while she was still alone.'

Tozer had been out of jail for less than three weeks when he murdered Mrs Charlton.

He had been serving a 15-month prison sentence for attacking a girlfriend's partner with a pool cue and also had a previous conviction for assaulting a police constable.

The court heard he had been staying with the family of his girlfriend when he raided Mrs Charlton's home after binge drinking on whiskey.

He used his victim's cash to buy new clothes and trainers and tried to escape justice. But he left palm prints and a shoe print at the blood-splattered scene.

It became common knowledge in the neighbourhood that he was to blame and was arrested.

Graham Reed, prosecuting, said Mrs Charlton's body was found by a friend several days after she had been attacked.

'Joan Charlton had been beaten, she was covered in blood and there had been attempts to set her alight,' said Mr Reed.

'The living room had been ransacked. It was likely she had been sat down in the living room when she was attacked. There were at least three blows.'

He said she did not die straight away, but had been found in the hall with a telephone near her hand, possibly trying to call for help.

There was a further attack in the hall and a bamboo wall hanging was ripped down and put on her body before being set alight, the court heard.

Tozer later admitted he thought she was still alive when he started the fire, which caused little damage.

The court heard Mrs Charlton may have been targeted because she was known to be frugal and save her pension cash.

A victim impact statement from her sister was read to the court. She said:'My family has been shocked to imagine someone could inflict such pain. I wake constantly with nightmares about how she died.

'One blow would have been bad enough but to go so far as this was evil. I had to identify my sister.

'That image will stay with me for life. I would like to make him (Tozer) understand exactly how he caused her to suffer.

'I hope that he never again gets the chance to do the same to someone else.'

I know that some folks think we sink down to their level with the eye for eye justice and these folks reproach others for such thinking. I would bet all my meager worldly wealth and possessions that if harsh and uncompromising justice was meted out, there would be far less crap going on.

If rapists and pedophiles were castrated in the public square with a dull object, I think you could guarantee there would be far less victims. It would approach zero

When the NYC subway vigilante Bernard Goetz used a concealed pistol to shoot his would be muggers (who approached him with a big screwdriver and asked/demanded for spare change) and then some other people started copying him, subway crime dropped precipitously in that city.

I believe it could easily reach the point where they would have to seriously lay police off, they wouldn't be needed. I would rather face vigilantes than the predators that are actively terrorizing and taking over our streets while the cops eat doughnuts

Couldn't agree more with anyone on this

But (as you all know) the government system is awash with half-wits

I personally wouldn't like to be hanged / electrocuted at said half-wits discretion

This said, Tozer should have a burning tyre round his neck if any of this is remotely true!

He should be locked away in the dark by himself, forever.

Everything else said leads to a new system of abuse imo.

We musnt become the monsters we loathe, no matter how tempting the reasoning.

Very trixxy is evil.

What a scumbag, he should never be released, this is why we should have the death penalty.

And...now you know why this story was released into the media.

I was a supporter of the death penalty too - until I realised what it actually represents is handing over the power of life and death to the establishment. No state should have the power to decide whether someone lives or dies, because all too often the law can be twisted in such a way as to be used to eliminate the enemies of the state.

I agree that this guy should be locked away for the rest of his life; failing all else, hand a gun over to the lady's family and let them decide.

This guy should get death penalty. On another note, I often see double text. Ie:Joan Charlton, a former teacher, was murdered in her own home

Can people start proofreading their copy & paste before they post it? Its not only this thread starter, its many posters here on David Icke. Thanks.

When i saw the thread title, i thought, this has to be in the UK, suprise suprise, it is.

Bring back Capital Punishment, these low-life scum know they will get given minimum reactions to their actions, lets strike fear into their hearts by giving pricks like this slow deaths, of the most painful kind.

And before you comment about being civilised, save it, what if it was your granmother?

What stops you putting your fingers in an electric socket?, well her house was no socket, quite the opposite in fact.

I do not fear death as it is all just part of the cycle. We are not born monsters but created. Why stoop to the level of the killer?? Are you really going to feel any better about yourself when your time comes?? All the suggestions of tortures and punishments for the disturbed to nothing but create more hate and violence. You do not fight fire with fire. And ponder this. If someone is insane enough to do things like this do you really think they fear death, castration, or torture?? Any amount of pain you can induce on someone can be overcome either by death or enlightenment.

Sorry litebritedeath, but although you raise some correct points, like stooping to the level of the criminal, I can say with certainty that harsh penalties that are not just codified on the books, but meted out, do have results. Lofty civilized ideas are just idealistic notions and not reality.

The reason is that yes, there are many harsh penalties on the law books already, but they are not handed down by the trustees of our legal systems, the courts and judges.

If a rapist knew that he stood a better than fair chance of losing his nuts for hurting someones wife or child, you can be well assured, he won't ever do it.

If a person knew with certainty that stealing would be met with the full sentence without parole, they would likely never do it. People cites cases where this didn't work, but those are just exceptions involving hard core criminals or mentally defective individuals. Most criminals would be deterred.

The judges have made a mockery of justice and the criminals have no respect for the law because of light sentences and parole. If the judges carried out their duties and beared the weight and responsibility entrusted to them by society, the world would indeed be a better place. Instead we have thugs ruling the streets and honest folks fearful of venturing out of their homes.

I don't care what bullshit studies show at all about crime and punishment. If those bums knew what was waiting for them, they would never, never do the awful things that they do.

Its like a war. There will always be battles, but either you are in it to win or not, some commitment is needed.

And yes indeed, we do need to address the causes like poverty, education etc. But never getting to the point where we are now. Where the criminals are laughing at the system. You can't practice compassion with tigers. They'll just eat ya.

This logic does not apply to a psychopath/sociopath. This person has a history of violence and has proven himself not capable of living in society. Consequences are a must. He already spent time incarcerated and it did nothing to reform him. Rather than risk him getting paroled and repeating himself on another unsuspecting person of infinite value he should be put out of his own misery. Besides, can any of you honestly say that we really need this individual alive on this planet at this point?

But I gotta admit that giving the gov't the power over life/death is a risky thing. I'd also be willing to bet that if the victim was a relative everyone would be singing a different tune.
