Mysterious Rock Formations at Potomac River, Paw Paw, West Virginia

Some 10 carefully constructed, superbly balanced rock formations were created on the banks of our property on the Potomac River at Paw Paw, WV, which, at that point, is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. The stacks were created between the time we left the "beach" Friday evening to Saturday morning, when we came back and our jaws dropped at the sight of this sudden field of river rock sculptures.

It was creepy and wonderful at the same time. The nearest take-out for kayakers (the river is too shallow for anything else) is several hours away; there was no sign of campers (a moot point as it is pitch black there at night); we heard nothing all night except the river. Someone put a lot of clever effort into something that is going to wash away very shortly. Additional photos here.

Fantail Falls Formations

We came across something similarly mysterious (see Mysterious Rock Formations from Buzz McClain) at Fantail Falls near Haast Pass on Aotearoa's south island (New Zealand). An amazing sight considering the frequency of earthquakes here in Godzone.

There is a beach on the windward side of Aruba (very rocky) which has hundreds of these unique rock piles. It's a tourist attraction there.
