Just 2 days ago I ordered 50 gram of Stevia extract for 6,75€ (said to equal 20 kilogram sugar), which is an extract of the sweet agents, Steviosides and Rebaudiosides of the Stevia Rebaudiana plant. The plant itself contains some bitter substances, which according to the manufacturer were removed.
In a sense all these alterations reduce most these Stevia products today to semi-synthetic sweeteners that might not even contain the anti-bacterial properties that have been associated with the plant.
As a standalone sweetener, Stevia powder is definatly something to get used to, because it lacks the smoothness of sugar. Stevia's aftertaste may be very reminding of some of the artificial sweeteners out there.
So far I've enjoyed it only in really moderate doses, I would use it in higher doses but only when supported by other flavors such as cinna and coconut powder.
However, Stevia seems perfect to fill one's daily need for sweetness in the diet, helping to aquire a good balance in taste (without having to resort to sugar and suffer it's adverse health effects).
People today seem to think sweetness equals sugar but I think that Stevia actually comes closer to the real, original taste of 'sweet'.
I think that what we got from sugar is much more of a shortlived drug effect which has little to do with sweetness itself.
That's why I believe Stevia is no substitute to sugar.
I enjoy using 1-2 minimal knife streaks of Stevia to a bit of Yoghurt mixed with banana slices and corn flakes.
The plant is said to be quite cool, you pick a leaf and get a piece that tastes like black licorice straight from nature.

nice 1
wanted to get some for ages..
would like my woman to bake with it and see the results..mmmmmmmm;)
I was doing a job the other day and the customers daughter has type 1 diabetis, she has had a miserable last few years with it and she is only 9 yeras old..
I told her to research stevia , as larry hagman endorses it and he to has type 1 diabetis..and i'm sure he say it actually fights this condition..
fingers crossed for the young girl.
she told me a story about ceratin pumps manufactured in the USandA for insulin and medication disspersion, which failed and almost killed her..
how they hushed it up then implemented a very subtle product recall for the remaining pumps..but in total denyal that the pumps every failed due to inferior manufacture..
the woman only wants her daughter well and a better quality of life for her..she is not at all interested in sueing the company..which is good charcter this day and age!

Last time I checked MMS was said to cure diabetis aswell.
Look I've even found a video about it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCbiN6zS1wk
Had a sore throat recently and I decided to knock it out and applied MMS topically only ONCE using 3 cotton sticks, then right the next day the infection was half sized and the day after completly gone.
Years back when I had the same I was given anti-biotics and the response was poor even after a week, and then after it was gone, it came right back!
From a pure chemical perspective, there is probably nothing that could kill pathogens faster than MMS, except for of course that which would also kill your blood cells but MMS is diluted down, operating under that threshold.
By first signs of overdose, your body will react with diarrhea, then vomiting and if overdosing even more - body shock/illness response.
Returning to the subject of Stevia, I've seen multiple times being said that it balances the blood sugar levels, a lil bonus for diabetis people I guess.
But I wonder how much of Stevia-plant's health benefits are actually associated to it's Stevioside's (sweet agents), which is 80-95% of what Stevia sweetening powders consist of.

I'm hoping to get some Stevia plants growing next Spring as I didn't get the seeds early enough for this year. It will be a valuable addition to my rapidly expanding collection.
I hope you take up tracker's suggestion for the natural remedies thread. I've just read your Nettle thread and will be trying out the eczema remedy on my daughter. It's valuable information that I have not heard before and is much appreciated - thank you. :)

Dear kernelpower,
It is an aquired taste and depends on what you add it with. So far I've had horrible experiences with baking stuff but I will keep trying, I love to add to tea tho.

yes def keep plugging away with it, as I often say , if the FDA bans something , buy a shit load of it and consume it like your life depended on it ( apricot kernels being THE prime example )
Peace.
