David Walliams is nominated for top literary prize... for children's novel about a cross-dressing schoolboy
David Walliams has been shortlisted for a prestigious literary prize after writing a children's book about a cross-dressing schoolboy.
The comic, creator of the controversial BBC television series Little Britain, has been nominated for the Roald Dahl Funny Prize, which honours the funniest books for children.
His debut novel The Boy In The Dress is up against well-established children's authors including Allan Ahlberg and former children's Laureate Anne Fine.

Honoured: David Walliams's first novel The Boy In The Dress has been nominated for the Roald Dahl Funny Prize
The book, which is aimed at children aged seven, tells the story of a 12-year-old boy named Dennis who enjoys dressing up in women's clothes and make-up. At one point he is scolded by his lorry-driver father for buying a copy of female fashion magazine Vogue.
Walliams, 38, who has frequently appeared in drag on Little Britain, has described the work as being about sexual awakening.
He said recently: 'I had the idea: what would happen if a boy went to school dressed as a girl? It's a story about adult hypocrisy, and the injustice of being a child. In a small way, it's about sexual awakening.
'But it's not a transvestite book. I don't want labels on it.'
