"Patrick Macnee was born into an aristocratic English family - his Father was a successful racehorse trainer and his mother was the lovely Dorothea Hastings, a niece of the Earl of Huntingdon (descendants of Robin Hood!)." Macnee's biography, on his personal Web site, continues:

"His parents divorced after his father ran off to India and his mother moved into Rooksnest, a bizarre household in Wiltshire, dominated by his mother's lady lover, the formidable "Uncle" Evelyn. At age three, he was bundled off to Summer Fields Prep School near Oxford. Patrick then entered Eton College, where apart from an active role with the school's dramatic society, he distinguished himself as the leading bookie and pornographer on campus - and was promptly expelled." Macnee is one of Britain's much loved actors, who is held, with much affection, in the hearts of many around the world. According to his biography on his own Web site, Patrick Macnee currently lives, with his wife and two dogs, in Southern California.

One of Macnee's most famous roles was as John Steed, in the British 60's series, "The Avengers", a type of detective/mysteries series, in which he played a secret agent, with the trademark bowler hat and umbrella. The series started off life in a more serious fashion, but became more surreal is it developed. His most famous female co-star was Diana Rigg, who played the role, Emma Peel...

In 1960 Patrick Macnee landed the leading role in an imaginative new British TV series, "The Avengers", playing John Steed, the suave, dashing Englishman with his bowler hat, rolled umbrella and fancy clothes. Overnight The Avengers became an international hit, Macnee's popularity soared and both show and star enjoyed a cult-like status. In the first season, Macnee's co-star was Ian Hendry. His subsequent co-stars were Honor Blackman, Diana Rigg, Linda Thorson and, in The New Avengers, Joanna Lumley and Gareth Hunt.

After nearly 40 years on television, The Avengers came to the big screen with Ralph Fiennes in the role of John Steed and Uma Thurman as Emma Peel. The new Steed continued to wear a bowler hat and carry a furled umbrella, but did not -- to Macnee's delight -- carry a gun.

A clip of the opening titles of "The Avengers", on YouTube, featuring Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg:

In the mid to late 70's, "The Avengers" became "The New Avengers", in a revival of the aforementioned series, in which Macnee had Joanna Lumley as his attractive female co-star. Joanna Lumley, who played the role of "Purdey", claimed that her former training with The Royal Ballet was where she learned her high-kicking skills, which she frequently used in the series... Of particular interest, the impeccably dressed, inimitable, suave and stylishly aristocratic Patrick Macnee also has an interest in the Illuminati, secret societies and the New World Order! He expresses this interest in an hour long DVD called, "Angels and Demons Revealed", which Patrick Macnee presents and hosts. Here's a 2 minute clip I've uploaded, from the beginning of the documentary:

There is a Google video stream available, but it's not very good quality...

Otherwise, you can try downloading a good quality version from ConCen, if it's still being sufficiently seeded...

Or perhaps if someone else has a good link!

I've seen that one. It's good. it features an undercover scoop of a meeting with Russian secret society members. MacNee also has done some films on the Rennes-le-Chateau mystery and a mainstream mystery show for the History Channel

It's understandable that he's got into this stuff when you consider that "The Avengers" dealt very much with secret realms and hidden technology.

I loved the Avengers! Wanted to be Diana Rigg in her slinky cat suits lol

I was fortunate enough to meet Patrick Macnee when I was a teenager
working in a record shop in Wellington New Zealand. He was in the country
performing a play he was in, and just wandered into the shop where I
worked and brought a pile of records.

He was a charming fella, and he chatted to me like we were old friends.
I got him to sign something of mine to show my mates who I knew wouldn't
believe I'd been nattering to him.....we didn't get too many overseas celebs
just walk in the door like that.

Long live The Avengers! :D

I agree! And the fact that he comes from an aristocratic background is interesting... I'm sure he's been aware of secretive societies throughout his life, with his family connections. He seems a very genuine person who wants the best for all others and for society. He must have been very pleased to have been able to express so much openly without the ridicule he would have got a decade or so ago!
