I have no idea where this post might belong. but also, i don't belong to any other forums, so i'm trying this here. I am very interested in language. So i am curious about something. are there any words you absolutely HATE to hear? and why? negative connotation? over-usage? ugly sounding? any reason at all. I'm just curious!
to be honest, I hate the word 'breath'. I think it is the ugliest word in the english language. it's not a romantic word whatsoever, and it's plastered all over romantic poetry and music. i think it is an ugly sounding word, used poorly in stupid context, and I think it's just a terrible fucking word altogether.
what is so romantic about someone saying 'you take my breath away?'
it's just gross to me. awful. it's also an lame cliche. does anyone see where I'm coming from? to me, telling someone they 'take your breath away' or anything of the sort, is as grotesque as someone saying 'you make my anus quiver'. something to that effect. but more important, are there any words you people dislike with this kind of intensity?

I use to hate the word whore, I would burn with rage if it was used on me. Then I became one and I used all the derogatory terms Joe Public would have used to discribe me at the time, to unload the bullet of the words.
Words only have the power you give them to effect you in any way.
Since joining this forum I found the words shill and sheeple use to get right up my nose, till I realised it was used as a weak arguement to discredit anyone one was disagreeing with at the time. Gun unloaded once again.
PS: Breath is life, it's a great word to use in poetry, baby breath flowers at weddings and puppy breath kisses from a small dog licking your face. :)

In english language I think the word 'milieu' just sounds really lame :o
If I ever had to use that in a vocal conversation I don't know what I would do:cool:

Yeh, some words just sound nasty and put my teeth on edge, hearing them is like when you hear someone draw their nails along a blackboard, they make me feel the cringey feeling like squishing squeaky cotton wool balls!
I hate wiggle, caveat (although that is a latin word it is used in the English language) and turgid.

The worst is when people would use it for trivial tasks, ie. "FOUND THE MILK, BLING BLING!"

I tried to find videos of the 2 A-Holes on saturday night live.
They are funny and do the 'babe' thing all the time.
But all videos I found say they are not available to watch outside of the US.
What A-Holes!!

I have a major major aversion to the word "gift" - I haaaaaaaaaate it. It makes me cringe, feel sick and feel angry all at the same time

I hate people describing themselves as hypo, (as in hypoactive), hypo means below as in hypodermic and hypothermia. If you were hypoactive you would be asleep. I also dislike the random use of the word random, and the use of bare and sick to describe things that are very and good. Most of the drivel that comes out of most peoples mouths gets right on my boobs come to think of it.

HAHA! I'm glad I'm not the only one :D
I don't hate it quite so much if it's used like "This person is really good at whatever..he has a gift for it" but when it's used like "Happy Birthday! Here is your gift.."
URGH! I can't explain my hatred of it. I just can't stand it :(

The quivering anus comment got me lol. Gifts are good (never look a gift horse in the mouth) Took me sometime when I was a child to get my head around that saying.
To gift someone is the opposite of curse? People also gift with Orgonite.
Floccinauccinihilipilification
This 30- letter-word is a non-scientific English word and it appears in the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. It is longer than antidisestablishmentarianism. The 1992 Guinness Book of World Records calls floccinaucinihilipilification “the longest real word in the Oxford English dictionary whereas it calls pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis “the longest made-up word in the Oxford English Dictionary.” It means “act or habit to deny the value of some particular things” but

a really interesting thread, thanks OP :)
one word that bugs me is (only when used in job-seeker context) is passionate.
You need to be "passionate" about customer service, target orientated sales, etc, passionate about ringing people up to say 'why haven't you paid your bill on time', etc.
who can be passionate about a crappy rip off job which rips off other people:eek:
cool thread, loved everyones answers !:D

compliance = bend down, bend over, turn yourself inside out, pay thru every bodily orifice to keep some inane bureaucrat happy. They can get stuffed - and you can quote me on that.
Two weeks ago I had to pay the tax on having a gas bottle in the back yard. I made the cheque out to 'SafeWork SA Fascists'. They never said a word, cashed the cheque and sent the compliance letter - it gave us a lot of pleasure to find an error on it and make them fix it :) Just waiting for the right one to arrive.

Words like "Chillax" (Chill and relax)
and "classic"... when somebody does something funny and their friends are like "oh my god, that was classic"
or "legend"... when somebody does something cool and memorable "You're a legend!"
I hate phrases like that and the people that use them are usually morons :p
