Many of us born in the fifties are healthier, more dynamic and more productive than many kids born in the eighties and our Moms smoked, drank wine and worked their butt to the last day while pregnant.
During pregnancy to combat abdominal pain they took aspirin, ate smelly cheese, and gave us milk to drink that had no expiration date and testing for diabetes did not exist.
My baby crib was made from the scratch by my stepfather and painted with bright colored lead-base paints and sharp corner. My unuttered dirty dog or cat was sharing my space.
Nothing was locked up and crawling the floor freshly bleached or corners loaded with rat poison never bugged me. No childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets existed in my old house and I rode my first bike when I rebuilt it after uncovering it under a decomposing dead cow dropped in the public garbage. I could not afford a helmet on my heads also and learned really fast after many cuts and bruises to be more careful.
The first time I rode a car was with my grandpa that thing was noisy, hard smoky and had no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, wood tires and you could only pry if you wanted to stop fast. Usually a fence, a lost cow or a small tree would do a better job.
My deceased brother Vince and I rode everyday 25 miles to go to work with my step dad on the back of his pick- up truck, rain or sun we HAD to go to work and never complained. A heavy tarp used to cover bags of cement and tools was a luxury if not a special treat. During a very hard day's work we always drank water from a dirty hose, purified icy water bottle did not exist for us. Note also that everyone was drinking from the same hose and no one died from sharing. We washed sweat and cement away and soothe our sizzling sun burned skin after work swimming in the river and drank the cold Ardeche water regularly. Mind you in these days no nuclear plant station or large greedy company were disposing of their poisonous chemical trash upstream.
We ate absolutely everything fattening, cake, over buttered French bread, raw pig meat, steak saignant, bacon , eat tons of sugar and, we could not a single pound? May be because we were both working hard and always outside playing!
On our days off we would leave home at sun rise and play all day and mom did not worry as long as we were back before dark. No cell phone then thus no one was able to reach us all day and guess what we were O.K.
With other friends we spent hours building our go-carts out of scraps found in the trash and then ride them down the hill and we lost a few hills and skin, suffered foot pain trying natural brake. During my upbringing we had no technological junk, no computer, no Internet, no play stations, Nintendo's and no video games. We had no TV, no radio CD's, DVD, surround-sound and no cell phones but we had tons of friends and we went outside looking for them because we knew they were looking for us.
We fought imaginary wars using our man made sling, air guns and during the battles we fell out of trees, broke legs, noses, loss teethes and no one went out of their way to hire an attorney because these accidents. Once I throw a branch at a kid and he nearly loss his eye… I was seriously punished for it while the families enjoyed good food and wine the next day. My brothers stole and I ate fruits on trees from the neighbor's house and we had to eat fast or be caught. Some fruits had worms living there and these pests went down then exit our bodies the next day. No problem, we were tough.
If I wanted to talk to a friend I walked or rode to his house or left a message to his mom I did not email him or call him on his cell, healthy exercise was imposed on us naturally and worked for us I may add.
BORN WITH AN ARIES DRAGON'S HEAD!
Incidentally Jay Leno, like me was born in 1950, with a Dragon's Head in Aries. I teach my students that soul born with a Dragon's Head *growth/luck in Aries are meant to become Leaders of the Mind! He also mentioned on his TV show that the idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of during our days in the fifties. They actually sided with the law! These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas he said. Is he right or what? Damn does coming in the US in 1984 totally destitute make me a risk taker?
