Just received our electoral registration forms through the post and on the front was written: "You must respond to this form. Failure to do so could result in a fine of up to £1000."

Now I'm not usually one to complain but - really - that's just rude isn't it?

So I have written an email to my 'local authority' to ask why so heavy handed and what law will they be acting under to extract this money from me if I don't conform to their demands?

below is what I sent them (no reply yet) - I wonder if anyone here has any experience of these laws that enable local government to fine people for not getting registered for a vote they don't want?

Cheers, MarkyV

Dear Sir/Madam,

Having received electoral registration forms through the post this
week, I must say that I was a bit upset by the tone on the
communication on the outside of the envelope - on the one hand it
seemed to read as a request to reply, on the other a legal demand for
information, non-compliance being rewarded with a hefty fine.

I have very little interest in politics, politicians and their wide
and varied shenanigans that plague our country. While I begrudgingly
pay my taxes to be used on petty minded bickering, subsidies for an
illegally formed superstates and grossly illegal wars on behalf of
corporate entities, I see no reason why I should then be browbeaten
into spending my time supplying information to a system that will no
doubt already have my current details on a large handful of computer
databases under the guise of 'Protecting my voting rights'.

I wonder if you could inform me of the precise statute or legislation
which is enforceable by law to enable my local government authority to
financially threaten me in this way. I can then make an informed
decision about my conduct concerning this communication.

Many thanks,

Good email. I too have the form for registering and it annoys and irritates me as I do not WANT to be governed. They will probably quote the statute law that is relevant but of course it has no validity in common law, and we live in a common law durisdiction don`t we?

My mother received a similar threat of a fine from a council tax form and I telephoned them and they just stated that it was a standard letter.

I mentioned common-law and gave an example of being given a parking ticket where no harm loss or injury was caused to an individual or property, and the totally wrongly trained man said "We don`t do that round here", just pathetic and laughable.

I will be very interested in their reply. Good luck.
