I just heard Rush Limbaugh mentioning this. That Obama could come to have the power to shut down the private-sector Internet in a state of cyber security emergency.
From the article:
"Internet companies and civil liberties groups were alarmed this spring when a U.S. Senate bill proposed handing the White House the power to disconnect private-sector computers from the Internet.
They're not much happier about a revised version that aides to Sen. Jay Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat, have spent months drafting behind closed doors. CNET News has obtained a copy of the 55-page draft (excerpt), which still appears to permit the president to seize temporary control of private-sector networks during a so-called cybersecurity emergency. It doesn't surprise me, especially when I saw Jay Rockefeller mentioned. The mere mention of that family name suggests fork-tongued motives and activities, so I know anything they're behind is shady at best.
There can't be any reason for such a bill, other than to cause a complete blackout for media, bloggers, and forums like these if something big goes down. It's funny how the U.S government gives China hell for this very thing, then attempts to do it too.
The bit that really makes me chuckle though, is how they think that removing the freedom of the internet will really have that much of an effect. Millions of us already know what they're about. So to that I say, little late to the party folks, thanks for stopping by though. :D

It is shocking to us in the UK at how "fascist" the Obama administration has become.
The UK media used to sing his praises - but they dont cover what he is doing very much anymore.
It reminds me very much of TONY "Saviour" BLAIR - a man who spoke big promises then failed to deliver any of them and so turned to "control" and "spin" in order to maintain his power. It seems Obama has done this within a few months of gaining power.
In his campaign he was going to pull troops out of Iraq and Afganistan - but once in power he has increased the number of troops and asked for more troops from the UK.
The UK is very against the Afganistan War and even our media dont see any point to the conflict - espcially because each week we have to see coffins being paraded on TV in Wooton Bassett.
Closing the INTERNET down would be a bad move. But surely that would only effect the USA - whilst the rest of the World would continue to be FREE !!!
I remember when the USA was seen as the land of the free and of opportunity. The country has been wrecked by the BUSH Dynasty since the early 1990s. It is such a shame.

Yeah, but the EU could follow the U.S. example. Plus I use a lot of U.S. websites.
But I doubt that they really would shut down the Internet. That would almost be like shutting down the electric power grid. Imagine companies no longer being able to send any e-mails for example.

I wonder what kind of danger the internet could pose that it would need to be shut down. Anyone?

Marshal law in the U.s/civil war/wide scale revolt.
Brute force attacks on the public Pentagon networks.
Alien cyber intervention. They may fear them attempting contact or getting info. Think the first transformers movie when they hacked the internet.
More material or irrefutable proof of Government corruption. Basically anything that would show the Obama administration, the federal reserve, and self proclaimed banking elite in a negative light that the public couldn't argue.

Hey I can see how it would be problem for TPTB, but I guess I wasn't clear on my question. How could this shutting down internet be beneficial for an avarage Joe. I mean why aren't people rising their voices against obvious fascism such as this. This is like digital inquisition, kill the heretics who dare to challenge the TPTB :P

I think a lot of people don't particularly see the internet as something important apart from porn, twitter, videos of people making asses of themselves, e-mail, and video games. They don't know that it's the largest compiled source of information in the world. Even if they did, I'm not sure many would really know what to do with it. If television stations and cellphone towers were shut down, there would be an uproar over it.
Secondly, many people don't realize how devious and paranoid governments can be. They assume a threat to be that dastardly hacker who steals information, or terrorists hacking the Pentagon from their caves on computers put together from the engine of a Russian hind, Balsa wood, spit, and a pair of sandals. A perceived threat could easily be anything that does not portray the government and current administration in a positive light. They haven't exactly outlined what they consider to be threats.
I guess it comes down to ignorance and apathy, and naively trusting in the intentions of others to do things for them.

MOST PHONES NOW USE THE INTERNET.... (Voip anyway) What are they gonna cut off phones also??
This is totally disgusting and just a way to cut off information from being exchanged like you said,etc....
HOW ARE THEY GOING TO DO THIS?????? START FILTERING ALL USA INTERNET TRAFFIC THRU 1 HUB THEY CONTROL?? http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/6356/icon04gh0.gif
Its all about doing away with total privacy online... They will only let you see WHAT THEY DONT CARE YOU SEEING!!
I really hope people are not stupid enough to believe the lies and let this pa$$!!

I'd bet that they would justify cutting off of web access by some kinda 'cyber terrorism' BS...it would be for our own good...maybe they miraculously discover some type of security flaw in windows operating system (plausible...I think so!) and the only way to protect the general public is by restricting internet access?

The president of the United States has always had the constitutional authority, and duty, to protect the American people and direct the national response to any emergency that threatens the security and safety of the United States.
Protection is good, like against cold in winter. But when you are thinking slaving your own people to do your job. I think it is gone too far. ;)
If there isn't any money profits war starting in this world at this point, then they think why dont we bring that war to the internet... divine and conquer tactic.. So we can have more that. We say no to that!!
We are in here, and we know this. We dont commit any crimes or criminal activities in here.
