BBC radio ordered off Russian FM

The BBC's Russian-language service will no longer be heard on Russian FM radio, after the country's media regulator ordered that it be removed.

The broadcaster's last FM distribution partner in Russia, Bolshoye Radio, said it had been told to remove BBC content or risk being shut down.

Two other Russian FM stations have dropped BBC programming recently.

The BBC's Russian Service can still be heard online and on medium and short wave frequencies in Russia.

BBC executives said they would appeal against the decision.

'Propaganda'

"The BBC entered into the relationship with Bolshoye Radio in good faith," said Richard Sambrook, Director of BBC Global News.
"We cannot understand how the licence is now interpreted in a way that does not reflect the original and thorough concept documents."

He said the licensing agreement allowed for 18% of Bolshoye's content to be foreign-produced.

Bolshoye Radio's owners, financial group Finam, told the BBC that Russia's media regulators required that all programming be produced by the station itself.

A spokesman for the company said management had made the decision without outside prompting and that it was well known that the BBC was set up to broadcast foreign propaganda.

"Any media which is government-financed is propaganda - it's a fact, it's not negative," the spokesman, Igor Ermachenkov, told the BBC.

A BBC spokesman, Mike Gardner, said: "Although the BBC is funded by the UK government... a fundamental principle of its constitution and its regulatory regime is that it is editorially independent of the UK government."

Critics say Russia is taking measures to curb media freedom ahead of parliamentary elections in December and a presidential poll in March.

I am just amazed to see the behavior of people who live on the British island. They are spewing so much hate towards Russia, and you point it out to them, they pretend that they just don't understand what's going on or they simply make naïve childish faces.

Well...

One day they will be making different faces....

I don't hate Russia, I love Russia. I think it's a amazing country with so much potential, it's just the government I don't like.

There's a surprise, huh?

lucky russians, don't have to listen to that crap anymore.
i think when you say that the british are directing hate at russia, and vice versa, the governments and media of those two respective countries are trying their best to make it seem that the british and the russians hate each other, but in reality it's their governments that are doing all the hating, the average person probably doesn't care either way.

Remind me again why i am paying a TV License...?

coz you are forced to. It is illegal to operate a tv set without a license and failure to obtain one can result in a fine. If you do not pay the fine balliffs may be sent to your house or you may be violently taken to court. It is quite accurate, the government funds the BBC and obtains the money with a cohersive license on tv usage which it not only uses to brainwash the 'citizens' it claims but those claimed by 'Russia' etc. too.

Oh come on! you can't base the opinions of a nation on what the media saying!

Since when has what the TV news and papers said ACTUALLY represented the opinions of the people.

To be honest, I'd be supprised if 00.2% of the country cares what is going on in russia - let alone directs any mallace towards her!

December, how can you comment on the people of this small Isle's as you put it, thoughts? How can you comment on Russia's thoughts too, if you don't live there.

Most the media reports on this is propoganda, this is to make the Russians think we don't like them and the other way round.

Most the population of the UK, didn't want to invade Iraq, but our government still went ahead with it, that doesn't mean that the people of the UK hate Iraqi's or agree with the occupation, but our government just does as it feels and brings out new supposed anti terror laws which will actually be used against the UK people protesting about our rights being taken away, or anything really such as illegal wars, so we can try our best at stopping the Illuminati goverment, but they will charge us with these new laws.

..to hate someone because of their nationality is pure nazi ideology, and thats a fact and if this hate is flamed up by the government and media, we could assume that this government is nazi government:) ..and thats exactly what is taking place here..
..i have some experience in this because my country was in war with serbia not long ago, yet little has left of that hate for serbs that was in the air then, but when radicals(ultranacionalists right wing) allmost won the ellection in serbia few months ago, fear and rememberance arose again( thus increasing support for enterance in nato pact), same thing with slovenia and croatia, there were some stagged incident in the adriatic sea about sea borders, and i started to notice that slovenian people weren't so popular those days :)

..same thing with britain and russia, these incidents remind people of the sssr and the iron curtain, and provoke fear thus provoking hate, but on what scale that is impossible to say..
