I normaly try and observe a solidarity fast throughout Ramadan - I'm not Muslim, but also fast at other times of the year.
I normaly do 3or4 4day fast through the year, but Ramadan allows for a month of fasting from dawn untill dusk 22 August 19 September for 2009.
Anyone care to join me?

I fasted during Ramadan two years ago, and found it to be one of the most challenging experiences of my life. Fasting generates an extremely powerful emotion in me, which I find difficult to explain.
I think I'd like to try again, actually. I've been thinking about it since Friday.

Zarah -
yeah, the bennefits of fasting are vast..... I do find complete fast quite hard unless I'v free time off work, and can just sit at home meditating....
A month of dawn - dusk fasting is much more easily achievable....
If you decide to give it a go, we can support each other here?It does get easier as the month goes on.
Are there any practising Muslims on the board?

I am not muslim either but have thought about this, I can't fast yet though not until I am on fatloss. Then I'll do the fasting, I though about doing 3 days solid?

I do 3/4 days fasting a few times a year - it is well worth it.... I just dont often have the time off work to devote to it.

im fasting too, for me the benefits are more wordly than spiritual for some reason:
- i live like a poor man, who cant afford to eat regularly, which makes me understand poverty better and give charity more generously
- i learn self control, not just giving into my whims and desires whenever i feel like it, making my willpower stronger
- i feel part of a community, when we gather at dusk in the mosque to pray together and open our fasts together and catch up on what we did that day
- the lack of food and sparse meal at the end of the day are a wonderful way to lose weight
and zarah - i know what you mean by challenging. but then again, nothing worth getting to is ever easy is it ;)

That's the problem, it's difficult while being at work. I have problems thinking clearly when I'm fasting, and I'm in charge of a largeish company which means I've gotta be on the ball.
I think I am going to give it a go...you've inspired me :p
There's a few practising Muslims on the board who're fasting too.

I took part in Ramadan in 200...7? It was torture, especially keeping it a secret. Last week when I was in Tunisia, it seemed unbelievable that I took part all those years ago.

Cafe...
it seems like torture, but you get used it.....
it only involves a slight change in lifestyle for me.... I usualy only eat two meals a day, so they are just more spaced out now.

Managed to last the whole day yesterday - had a little hunger pang around 3pm, and the last hour was a drag.....
on the upside, my plate of Borscht to break the fast tasted absolutely devine.....
just shows that a small sacrafice, makes what you do have all the more precious.
