They back slowly away (turning and running would have triggered an attack response from the crowd...) in a tactical retreat. If there are arrests to be made this will happen later based on video evidence (although I'm not suggesting that any offence was being committed in that video clip).

Consider the Bradford riots of 2001. Nearly 300 people were arrested and sentences totalling over 600 years were handed down - it took over 6 years after the event until all those arrests were made. I'm surprised that a smart cookie like you can't see that if the policeman had approached the vehicle with the same vigour that they reserve for the drunks on a Fri/Sat night, for striking miners, for other (white) political activists (and, yes; thugs)...given that there were only a handful of them, they would have been beaten to a pulp, or worse.

Whilst I winced (with shame), at the way he approached the situation, that is reality here in Britain.
I also sympathise with the cop: he sees a real (at common law), breach of the peace and feels compelled to do something about it, but there's so much hatred simmering just under the surface in this country that it's necessary for him to broach the situation in the way he did.

It doesn't matter if this video is a few years old; the situation is much the same.
Tony Blair is no longer the Prime Minister, Michael Howard is no longer leader of the opposition and Charles Kennedy is no longer leader of the 3rd-ranking political party...the names have changed.

I don't blame him, he could either go about pleasing the daily mail readers by going about forcefully, and risk starting a riot, which could be necessarily avoided or he could go about pleasing the guardian readers like he did, but then again they probably would still criticize. It seems to be just critical arm chair analysis, everyone says "if i were that policeman" but the truth is you weren't. I doubt most people would leave their coshty 9 to five job, where the biggest threat you face daily is losing your seat on the tube, for dealing with groups of volatile young men. Im not trying to direct this to you metacomet, i enjoy reading the majority of your posts, but i have to stick up for them in this one.
