Hearing postponed for Plymouth Twp. teen convicted in beheading

Detroit -- Psychiatric testimony expected today was postponed to next month for a Plymouth Township teen seeking a new trial to overturn his conviction for beheading an acquaintance.

Jean Pierre Orlewicz, now 19, is serving life for the November 2007 slaying of Daniel Sorensen, 26, a crime Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy described as a "thrill killing."

Orlewicz was convicted of planning Sorensen's death by luring him into a Canton Township garage with tarps laid out in advance, and knives, a hacksaw and cleaning supplies on hand. Sorensen was stabbed to death, then beheaded, and his fingerprints changed with a blow torch. The headless body was dumped in Northville Township and set on fire. The head was tossed into the Rouge River.

Orlewicz's lawyers are seeking a new trial based on the original trial judge's decision to not allow testimony from a psychologist who planned to talk about Orlewicz' psychological problems. That doctor has since testified before Wayne County Circuit Judge Bruce Morrow, who is waiting to decide whether to grant a new trial until after hearing the opinion of a prosecution psychiatrist who recently interviewed Orlewicz at the St. Louis Correctional Facility.

That testimony is set for Sept. 18.
