Funny, Al Jazeera seems to be the only agency covering this story. I searched CNN - nothing about it there. I live in California and this is the first I've heard of it.

From http://english.aljazeera.net/news/americas/2009/08/200981725850217193.html

Mexico has replaced all 700 of its customs inspectors in a bid to stamp out corruption and drug smuggling.

Sunday's shake-up also doubled the size of the country's customs inspection force, with more than 1,400 new inspectors dispatched to 49 customs points at airports and border crossings.

The new agents have undergone background checks to ensure they have no criminal records and received months of training, Pedro Canabal, a spokesman for the tax administration service, said on Sunday.

The previous agents were replaced after some were found to be linked to contraband operations, sources at the interior ministry told the AFP news agency.

Custom inspectors were told to turn over their badges and weapons to soldiers before leaving their posts at airports and border crossings across the country on Saturday night.

Enrique Torres, a spokesman for the military and federal police in the northern city of Ciudad Juarez, said soldiers were at the border crossing with El Paso, Texas, to help avoid violence during the transition.

Canabal said the previous inspectors were not fired - the government just did not rehire them when their contracts expired.

The move is part of a broader effort to root out corruption and improve vigilance at Mexican ports with new technology.

The new agents have been taught to use new equipment installed at border crossings to scan for hidden contraband and more dogs trained to sniff out drugs and other banned goods are also being added.

The main focus of the overhaul is to combat tax evasion, although Mexico is also trying to seize more guns smuggled in from the US and elsewhere that end up in the hands of deadly drug gangs.

Canabal said the government hopes to improve its tax collection with the new system, noting that more than 40 per cent of Mexico's value-added tax is collected at customs.

However, he said the main benefit will be stopping the flood of pirated and cheap goods that he said undermine Mexican industries.

The new agents, more than 70 per cent of whom are university educated, were chosen in a "strict selection process that included psychological and toxicological checks, as well as the necessary investigations to ensure they have no criminal record", the tax administration said in a statement.

Canabal said the 700 who were replaced – fewer than 10 per cent of whom have university degrees - would not be banned from reapplying for their jobs, but would have to meet the new, stricter requirements.

That would upset the CIA if the Mexicans started to combat drug smuggling. They're not actually supposed to do that.

I'm afraid the war on drugs has gone batty in Mexico. The DEA is a for profit agency that involves itself in way too many foregin interests. Now, with Plan Merida, the Mexican Government's corruption can be solidified.

We need to shut down the DEA.

NOW!

Wasn't there a thread not so long ago about the leaders of Mexico, US and Canada meeting behind closed doors, with an unknown agenda?

Now we hear of ALL Mexican border guards being replaced and numbers doubled?

Coincidence?

If I'm mistaken; feel free to correct me.
This is simply the first brain fart that squeezed out.

The DEA are essentially the cogs in the illegal drugs trade that ensure it runs smoothly. They help the CIA facilitate supply and keep the corrupt US prison system with a more than steady supply of slave labour. Anyone who gets in their way is put into the US prison system.

THis thread is Number 5 on Google. I find that pretty amazing. And scary that no one is talking. The "mypetjawa" blog in the search results has this to say:

Wow: 1,100 Mexican Border Agents Fired
A sign that Mexico is getting serious about cleaning up corruption? Keep your fingers crossed, but don't hold your breath.
AFP:
Agents in Nuevo Laredo, on the border with the southern US state of Texas, were called in Saturday to be told they were fired, and to hand in their badges and weapons. A total of 1,100 agents were sacked, Mexican media said.
Army troops took over customs border posts temporarily on Sunday.
I'm assuming that Mexican customs agents do something similar to ours. That is, they check stuff coming in to Mexico not going out. And since the fired agents were working on the U.S. - Mexico border then this may have more to do with the traditional Mexican narrative that its internal problems are somehow connected to Yankee imperialism. In this case, that the violence along the border can be blamed on the smuggling of weapons in from the United States, which is a popular political narrative south of the border. Which is patently ridiculous.
If Mexico wants to blame the U.S. for its internal violence, if anything it should blame our -- and their -- drug laws which put the buying and selling of drugs outside the normal commercial and legal system.
Thanks to Bones.

I didn't add the "Bones" part. I also noticed that the Mecca time on the original post was 3:22.

Spot on, definitely.
