My family lived in the middle of acres of bush until I was 2 years old, so I obviously don't remember it, but in the 15 years they lived their my mother killed dozens of snakes - pounded them into oblivion with a shovel she kept inside the back door. She really hated snakes (obviously), but wasn't afraid to go after them.

Rattlesnakes like most snakes, tend to keep away from people, if you walk noisily they will go away, not being able to hear they sens your movement. Also, they help keep vermin at bay, mice, rats and other nasties which spread diseases which kill more people than snake bites. Some snakes are actually harmless to humans but eat others which are venomous. It's a balance which we must be careful not to tip too far by removing certain predators one may be overrun by the things which they would otherwise have eaten.
