When rapper Antavio Johnson wrote the song "Kill Me A Cop" in his teen years and uploaded it onto a Myspace page, the possibility of future consequences was certainly not expected. Now, years later, Johnson is facing a two-year sentence for the aggressive lyrics he used in the song.
According to authorities, the 20-year-old rapper expressed his desire to kill two Lakeland, Florida officials in the song, which detectives found while researching gang-related activity on Myspace.com. On the track, Johnson calls the two officers out by name--one male and one female-- and claims that they had harassed him during an earlier incident. In the song, Johnson announces, "I'ma kill me a cop one day," and threatens to shoot the officers in the "dome" with a "glock" if they ever "get my timing wrong."
Already serving time for a probation violation related to cocaine use, the legitimacy of Johnson's added two years in prison is being questioned by the public. Many wonder if Johnson's sentencing is unconstitutional and if it goes against the right to free speech. The American Civil Liberties Union, which is backing Johnson, maintained that "We [shouldn't] punish bad thoughts in America." However, not all speech is protected under the Constitution. Florida state law deems it a third-degree felony to harm or threaten to harm public servants, their families, or people they care about.
Discontent with police officers, however, is nothing new in the rap genre. More than 20 years ago, N.W.A. boldly challenged authorities with their protest record "Fuck Tha Police" while Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg's "Deep Cover" years later talked explicity about murdering police officials.
Previously, Johnson could not obtain a lawyer, but he has recently obtained one, as well as the support of the ACLU.

reminds me of the Ice T/Bodycount Cop Killer song years ago, he was close to being charged with sedition at one point i think..at least thats what he said.
Well if he used their names in correlation with killing them, it seems justifiable.

True there is a big difference, in making it illegal to film officers on duty, and writing songs calling them to be killed. It seems justifiable to me also.

There is free speech, but there has to come responsibility as it is a delicate thing. Abusing free speech ends up destroying everyone else's rights in the end.

I'm all for songs like 2pac - Words of Wisdom
Or even NWA - Fuck The Police
But calling the guys out by name is a little stupid. Be creative and smart, don't stoop to their level.

Prosecutors using rap lyrics as evidence in court is nothing new. In C-Murder's murder trial, they used not only his lyrics but also his name against him. I think that making songs to highlights Police brutality and harassment is a good thing because it sheds some light on the problems many people face with Law Enforcement.... but to use actual names of people is ignorant. You have to recognize that "Freedom of Speech" is guaranteed to only a select few in America.

Who here has heard the song or read the lyrics? Just curious because you should before condemning it or it`s author.

I haven't.
But if he names the cops specifically in the song I can see how they'd leap at the chance to nail him for it.

Sure but in the song Cop Killer Ice T mentions people by name. I mean he does not say "I`m a cop killer and i want to kill officer bloggs" but actual people are named. I did not see a direct quote in that article that had names and actions together.
It also seems to me that this has just caused the song to get more light on it. How many people played the song before it was presumably pulled I wonder.

The following lyrics are excerpts from the rap song "Kill Me a Cop," written and recorded by Antavio Johnson:
Hi, Grady
Free My Ni**a Chico
Straight up
Free My Ni**a Chico
Im'ma see you when you get home, homey.
Im'ma kill me a cop one day
He'ey
Cause I'm tired of em playin' with my life
Lord, I know it ain't right.
It ain't right, no
If Officer ...................[name removed upon request by LPD] he care at all
Get my timing wrong
Im'ma be puttin' one in his dome
Mr. Officer
Mr. Officer
Try me on the wrong day
And I'm offin' ya
I gotta grudge with the judge
Rugers for prosecutors
Calicos for C.O.'s
Bullet holes for P.O.'s
Call me crazy but I think I fell in love with the sound
Of hearing the dispatcher saying, "Officer Down"
Im'ma kill me a cop one day
He'ey
Cause I'm tired of em playin' with my life
Lord, I know it ain't right.
It ain't right, no
Hey!!! T.O.!!!
If Officer ............... [name removed upon request by LPD]
The Wonder Woman
Get my timing wrong
I'm a be puttin' one in her dome
Mrs. Officer
Mrs. Officer
Try me on the wrong day
And I'm offin' ya
I gotta Glock for a cop
Choppers for crime stoppers
And one in the cartridge
For the Lakeland Police Department

Did Ice T name names in Cop Killer? I don't remember that.
Anyway, 99.95% of rappers are full of shit and would sell out as soon as the opportunity presented itself.
This probably is another clever marketing/social-conditioning stunt.

Thank you for posting the lyrics. He only mentions last names and he says " i know it aint right". I think the song expresses his anger. It is after all a song and would be kind of stupid if he was actually planning to kill those particular cops.
Just like Fuck tha police and copkiller are songs expressing anger so is this. The way they just added to his sentence however does not appear lawful to me. If they feel the song is breaking a law then why not take him to court? Or was this all orchestrated to get the song to sell. ha.

Not directly but he mentioned Rodney King and Daryl Gates(victims) but for some reasons I thought he mentioned Tipper Gore(another song perhaps). My mistake but still it seems to me that a general "killing cops" should be worse than a specific one. I mean who knows the exact cop that this guy means when he just says a common last name? Not many I am guessing. Usually you won`t even know a cops name if they give you a ticket let alone if you pass them on a street.
Anyway I usually only like political hip hop but this one is quite catchy. Anger is an emotion that should be allowed in art as much as love is allowed. I think that listening to this song is as much a release as shooting a cop would be.

He wouldn't be the first rapper to do this by a long mile but he's the first I've heard of being arrested for it.
Now's the time to rattle every cage and get all the animals hopping mad and barking and howling and pointing the finger of rage at one another.

I got my black shirt on.
I got my black gloves on.
I got my ski mask on.
This shit's been too long.
I got my twelve gauge sawed off.
I got my headlights turned off.
I'm 'bout to bust some shots off.
I'm 'bout to dust some cops off.
Cop killer, better you than me.
Cop killer, f**k police brutality!
Cop killer, I know your family's grievin'
(f**k 'em)
Cop killer, but tonight we get even.
I got my brain on hype.
Tonight'll be your night.
I got this long-assed knife,
and your neck looks just right.
My adrenaline's pumpin'.
I got my stereo bumpin'.
I'm 'bout to kill me somethin'
A pig stopped me for nuthin'!
Cop killer, better you than me.
Cop killer, f**k police brutality!
Cop killer, I know your mama's grievin'
(f**k her)
Cop killer, but tonight we get even.
Die, die, die pig, die!
F**k the police!
F**k the police!
F**k the police!
F**k the police!
F**k the police!
F**k the police!
F**k the police yeah!
Cop killer, better you than me.
I'm a Cop killer, f**k police brutality!
Cop killer, I know your family's grievin'
(f**k 'em)
Cop killer, but tonight we get even.
F**k the police!
F**k the police!
F**k the police!
F**k the police!
F**k the police!
F**k the police!
F**k the police!
F**k the police, break it down.
F**k the police, yeah.
F**k the police, for Darryl Gates.
F**k the police, for Rodney King.
F**k the police, for my dead homies.
F**k the police, for your freedom.
F**k the police, don't be a pussy.
F**k the police, have some muthaf**kin' courage.
F**k the police, sing along.

No, no, he sodomises Tipper Gore's daughter dressed as a clan member at a rally in KKK Bitch.
Great album. :D
I think he mentions Sergeant Stacey Coombs in one song, doesn't he?

The best bit is that Al Gore (or Tipper) is onstage inciting the crowd while T is covertly slipping the black bone up their daughter's ass through her lily white Clan robes.

KKK Bitch is perhaps the best song on that album. As Ice T said in that song

It really dont matter. if you from mars, and you got a pussy,
We will fuck you. you know, thats all were sayin, word.

yeah well done for this true statement .
rap has changed from a loving life free soul music to a gangsters paradise of totalverbal crap that needs binning !
personally ,most of our youth today is influenced by music , and if it wasnt for all those rappers that do sware like a trooper . advertise gangsters and crime , we wouldnt have such a hard time influencing our kids , so if some one is going to start crap songs about killing cops ,
they deserve what they get .
One might not like cops , but to advertsie and cash in on a song that premotes killing them ?
fk that for a laugh , it isnt funny and that rapper probably got off lightly ---what a numpty !

If I may point out to you that the most popular rap songs and groups do not represent the entire genre. There is a lot of music out there. It might be underground but these days the underground is very easy to get a hold of.
Besides that swearing serves a purpose. It demonstrates anger. If you look at history the police is an oppressive organization that has a very negative history particularly when it comes to it`s treatment of non white`s. The beat downs and harassment make this song seem like a small "crime" in comparison. It is a song not an act.

I thought Public Enemy and KRS 1 were pretty great too. "Cop Killer" had to be removed from Ice T's album. There was a recall/reissue. NWA and "Straight Outta Compton" was fantastic, but "Niggaz4Life" was a disappointment to me. Pharcyde was entertaining.

Alot of people tend to forget, Tupac Amaru Shakur was a great man and one of the biggest Freedom Fighters there was. If you hate rap i can understand but you have to love the man for his passion against oppression and the system. We lost a great man!!!

Actually I believe it was Ice T who removed the song. At least according to Ice T. I don`t think it was forced. Maybe he beat somebody to the punch but I think it was his choice.
