BRITAIN'S oldest crime suspect was yesterday revealed to be a man aged NINETY-NINE.

The frail pensioner was nicked for allegedly possessing weapons and equipment for stealing.

Cops swooped on the man - set to get a telegram from the Queen on his next birthday - in Fletton, Cambridgeshire. It is not known if he was prosecuted.

He was among 50 pensioners arrested over the past three years by Cambridgeshire Police. The figures were revealed under the Freedom of Information Act.

Suspects nicked by cops included a 78-year-old accused of sexually assaulting a girl under 13, an 83-year-old caught driving dangerously and a 69-year-old charged with forgery.

A 73-year-old was arrested for faking drug prescriptions, a 70-year-old was nicked for common assault and a 65-year-old was caught trafficking controlled drugs.

Other arrests included a 70-year-old involved in cheque and credit card fraud, and a 79-year-old who wounded a victim in Cambridge city centre.

Pensioners are said to be responsible for 2,000 crimes a year across the country.

A spokesman for Help the Aged last night said everyone was capable of committing crime, regardless of age. He added: "There is no justification for criminal behaviour at any time of life."
