OC man charged with modifying video game consoles
LOS ANGELES — A Southern California college student has been arrested on federal charges that he illegally modified video game consoles to enable the machines to play pirated video games.
The U.S. Attorney's Office says 27-year-old Matthew Crippen was released Monday night after posting $5,000 bond.
The California State University, Fullerton student who lives in Anaheim is accused of modifying Xbox, PlayStation and Wii consoles in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents got a tip from the Entertainment Software Association and searched Crippen's home in May.
He was indicted on two counts by a federal grand jury. Crippen faces 10 years in prison if convicted and is scheduled for arraignment on Aug. 10.
Attempts to reach Crippen for comment were unsuccessful.
No fcuking way!!!
The punishment do not fit the alleged crime.

shit, 10 years is a bit excessive dont you think. The town that I live in a guy punched another guy and killed him, he was out after a year, the law makes no sense. Or maybe this Crippen guy knows something he shouldnt and the console crime is a front for something else.

you should write this down in a letter to ARNOLD!
like thefreedom writes. there seems to be HUGE biases in what punishments get thrown out. (well some are probably subject to all those insane magnitude meausrement system they use or sumething) but wow 10 years. it really does sound like he has killed someone.
and if hes not allowed to mod a machine. WHT DO THEY SELL THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE?

honestly?..lol
he built his microsoft empire by ensuring his software aloweed all other programmes to run smothely..but microsoft programes on other formats would cause instability and regular crashes..
this is why people assumed the microsoft way, was the way to go..things seemed to work better..lol
I think there was court proceedings anout this in the 90's
also,
what about people modding thier cars?
regarding these consoles..its thiers to do with as they please..if they use the illegal software thats a different issue, but modifying it is surely the perogative of the owner!!!
a good lawyer should be able to fight this one successfully ;) Yoz.................

Microsoft has a history of stealing software from smaller companies. There was a long heated court battle over Microsoft's directx program, which another company claimed it came up with first. Eventually the smaller company lost the battle, likely due to the army of Microsoft lawyers.
The whole silicon valley in California started with people like Steve Wozniak and Gates, modifying computers and circuit boards. Windows itself wasn't Bill Gates' creation. He bought it from someone else and then modified it. It's just funny (Ironic funny) that this guy is being charged when that's how a lot of the computer industry in the U.S got started.

They protect "their" law which is corporate law, if it's worth $$$ they'll protect it.

So games are part of Immigration and Customs Enforcement . I wonder why ice wasn't out there catching those people that traffic children (those high people in office ) Everyone should watch conspiracy of silence . Those high up in office paid for it not the be shown on tv, but it got out anyways. Its on the net.
Anywho, I also see homeland security department. So since when is a video game part of "homeland security". Homeland security sounds like back in the Hitler days "protecting the homeland" as he would say.
Well we all (should) know that the government is corrupt and all (most) of its chronie agencies that are part of it. This just shows it more.
The real case should start such as "Why was Homeland Security and ICE going after someone who modded consoles?" That should be the real story.

There's a difference between modding like that, and modding consoles to play pirated games. The sentence of 10 years is rediculous, but i guess they do say "before you do the crime, think about the time"

agree the bill gates stuff doesnt make sense people just love any excuse to bash Microsoft. The business practices have nothing to do with the DMCA in this case, its not like Microsoft have brought the charges and filed a civil case for damages.

Was the guy who was killed a Multi-National Corporation who viewed everything as it's rightful property and has paid the legal system enough to ensure it provides the punishment it sees fit for daring to try and take a dollar off it?
Or was he only a human being? Meh! Loads of them about the place - who cares about them? Now shush - I'm counting my money!

its simple posts like krakheads above that cement the idea for me that we are being run by an evil system. Im thinking that a corrupt goverment is a best case scenario after reading some of the things ive read of late.
