An American man has been charged with launching a 'random' axe attack and chopping off the head of a passerby who was exercising.
On Tuesday, Nicholas Bendle, 20, was charged in a Santa Maria, California court with murder by decapitating Frederick Holgate, 69 in an apparently unmotivated assault, the Associated Press reported.
The incident took place on Saturday as the victim was on an early-day promenade.
Police denied Bendle's prior acquaintance with Holgate as well as drug dependence on part of the attacker.
Police rushed to Bendle's home when his mother called them saying he had come home covered in blood.
"I don't think it's any mystery there's some psychological problems that are evident by his behavior, and that's what I'm looking at right now," said Jim Voysey, an assistant public defender.
