David Kelly was an employee of the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence (MoD), an expert in biological warfare and a former United Nations weapons inspector in Iraq. Kelly's discussion with BBC Radio4 Today Programme journalist Andrew Gilligan about the British government's dossier on weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in Iraq inadvertently caused a major political scandal. He was found dead days after appearing before the Parliamentary committee charged with investigating the scandal. Many people tried to distance themselves from his death, including the BBC and the MOD. Dr Kelly's family felt very unhappy with the way he had been treated.

The Hutton Inquiry, a public inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death, ruled that he had committed suicide, and that Kelly had not in fact said some of the things attributed to him by Gilligan. The following day, 28 January 2004, the entire front page of The Independent was covered with a single word in giant letters: "WHITEWASH".

several senior doctors write to a newspaper to take issue with the official explanation of how David Kelly died. John Scurr, an expert in vascular surgery, concludes: “Frankly I don’t believe that simply cutting an ulnar artery will cause death.” The first paramedics to attend Kelly’s body on a wooded hillside near his Oxfordshire home note that the small amount of blood does not seem consistent with fatal bleeding.

There’s more. The pathologist who pronounced the cause of death later has a change of heart. Then it emerges that police found no fingerprints on the knife that Kelly supposedly used to kill himself or on the water bottle lying next to the body. And why did Operation Mason, the police investigation into his death, start nine hours before Kelly was even reported missing?

I knew instinctively as soon as I heard the news about Dr Kelly being found dead that he was murdered. It was the same feeling I got when I heard about the Twin Towers fiasco, my first reaction was "it was an inside job". Poor man, that is what he got for his integrity. Will the culprits be revealed and punished? Sadly, I doubt it.

I think Baker has been threatened because he is backtracking now and blaming Iraqis for doing the killing.
