Hurricane Flossie Now Category 4
Headed Toward Hawaii
Maximum sustained winds near 132 mph. National Weather Service in Honolulu predicts storm will pass the Hawaiian Islands early Wednesday with 8 - 12-feet-high waves on the Big Island's South Point. Cooler waters expected to weaken wind speeds.

Hurricane Flossie Could Be Cat 3 When It Passes Hawaii Late Tuesday.

The National Weather Service placed the Big Island under a hurricane and flash flood watch through Wednesday, August 15, with possible flash flooding in areas. Hurricane sustained winds around 111 mph expected. Fortunately, the least populated southern end of the island is where Hurricane Flossie is most likely to hit. 150,000 people live in the Big Island's west or northeast.

110 mph winds, 14-foot-waves and lots of rain prompt authorities to declare
state of emergency for Big Island of Hawaii.

In eastern Atlantic Ocean, Tropical Storm Dean could become the first Atlantic hurricane of 2007. Dean is predicted to become a Category 2 with winds around 96 mph by this weekend, but no path is yet clear.
