Implications for international trade in food products...

But the ruling also has an equally profound implication for export trade in processed foods and drinks. The Court stated that even if a functional food product (or a food containing it) is legally marketed as a food in one member state, it cannot be exported to any other member state unless it has a medicinal licence. So any company making a consumable product using fluoridated water in its preparation or as an ingredient cannot now export that product to any other state in the EC, even if their product is permitted in their home state.

The economic implications are enormous. Not only does the ruling ban the use of fluoridated water for all retail catering and wholesale food processing in the UK and Ireland, it also prohibits such trade from these states to other member states of the EC.

But it goes much further than even this, because if British and Irish processed foods from fluoridated areas cannot be exported to the EC, this prohibition must also apply to the importing of such products into EC member states from any other country that practices water fluoridation. The decision effectively bans all processed food products from countries such as the USA, Australia and New Zealand, unless they can be positively proven to have been prepared using only water that was not fluoridated.

You seriously have to wonder if it was really an accident or if they are trialling higher doses?

I live in South Australia and I am sure by what I see in my shop that that there are waves of people (all ages, local and visitors from the city) coming in totally stupefied, other times not so bad.

Dimmingsdale fluoridation incident

Between 30th June - 7th July 2008, two samples of water taken from our Dimmingsdale Water Treatment Works contained levels in excess of the UK water quality standard for fluoride of 1.5milligram/litre.

There is no suggestion from the worldwide scientific evidence that such a short term elevated level of fluoride would have caused adverse health effects in the short or the longer term.

Whilst we are confident that the water leaving the site was fit to drink, these samples and the way in which they arose fell short of the high standards we expect at Severn Trent.

We’ve taken action on a number of fronts, learning from the incident to minimise the risk of any repetition.

* We have reviewed and strengthened controls and procedures
* We have told our staff about our rigorous procedures and how to apply them
* We are reviewing notification and response to samples and monitor alarms
* We have carried out extra audits to check fail-safe shut-downs are intact
* We have checked the correct setting of alarm systems at fluoridation plants

We would like to reassure our customers that drinking water leaving the Dimmingsdale Works continues to be safe and wholesome. Severn Trent in the last year achieved 99.97% compliance with rigorous and independently monitored quality standards.
