Hitler did it, he gave germany ID cards to single out jews on the national register when he came to power.
Sure this goverment many not want them used for more sinister ends now but who's to stop a future government using ID cards for the same reasons as Hitler.

1. Symbol meaning a chip is embedded in the card
2. National Identity Registration Number
3. Citizenship. Foreign nationals in the UK are being given different cards.
4. Place of birth
5. Signature - digitally embedded in the card
6. Date of card issue and date it becomes invalid
7. Photo taken to biometric standards
8. Biometric chip holds fingerprint record
9. Swipe zone. Information which can be automatically read by computer
Anyone who steals this gets a shit load of your info, criminals (no not the government the terror ones - erm?) with the tech. get:
Your Reg. No., place of birth, signature, photo, fingerprints and fuck knows whatever else is in the Swipe Zone
Not only that its all in a database - which is completely impenetrable and totally unloseable.
I envisage a massive scandal, where the entire populations details are lost or stolen... what would be the solution? embedded body chips?
They are setting this up to fail imo, it's a sad sad day.
edit: Also does this mean they also get your fingerprints crime or no crime... what a stitch up.
Did this democratic government ever ask anyone if they wanted this?

It must be at a stage now where the people of the UK can go to another country and claim political asylum

Why does anybody need an ID card?
I don't need one because I know who I am.
If you don't know who I am it is because I don't want you to know.....piss off :)

Help prevent terrorism? Bollocks.
And it seems the government has forgotten that not all countries in Europe or the world use the same date format as the UK. There's a blunder waiting to happen.
The card shows months as numbers, but on passports they have the month written as three letters, e.g. JAN.
If the card is to be made valid in the US, many people born before or on the 12th day of the month will have trouble, as, of course, the US have mm/dd/yyyy, so there's the possibility of being held by US immigration services over your date of birth (it HAS happened to people before!)
Some foreign nationals given the card may also complain that their date of birth is "incorrect" or may misread the 'valid until' date.
Perhaps someone should remind them of ISO8601 or British Standard No. BS ISO 8601:2004

They know exactly who we are when collecting, our earnings, taxes, fines, tributes & kicking in doors to search for 'contraband'.

We've had ID books in SA for yonks so I've always carried ID, that is until two years ago when my passport expired and I lost my ID book along with my drivers licence when my wallet got stolen. I've finally got my new passport back, it's been hell without a drivers licence which I couldn't get replaced by the DVLA without photo ID. Wankers!
I'm conditioned already. I'm so glad I have my Identity back! Next stop my drivers licence and then hopefully some sexy new wheels!
godspeed

I sent my license to DVLA to notify a change of address. They wouldn't send it back unless I sent them a passport, to confirm my ID LOL and photograph so they can issue a photo license. (Back door ID card)
As I don't want to comply with this new system I just let them keep hold of my license for me. :) And it is safer there - if they lose it is their fault - and if I don't have it I can't lose it and have to pay to replace it. I like this agreement.
Besides the new card has to be renewed every ten years which will cost me - and I don't want to keep paying for something I only needed to do once.

Remember that old chestnut "If you haven't got anything to hide what is the problem"
My answer is; I have got something to hide - I want to hide the fact that I have nothing to hide........:D

i like the way it says it will be 'offered' to the people of greater manchester, does that mean i can tell them to 'kindly fuck off'?
Well, they are saying that it's not compulsory, do you agree?

since pretty much everyone is against it, then what is the point if it's not compulsory? no-one is gonna shell out £30 quid for something they aren't going to use. they've just wasted billions on more shit we don't need.

Tell 'em to "Piss Off already" :)
My mind is stunned**** People are offered the opportunity to buy(£30.00) a worthless, pointless piece of plastic that they do not need and will be fined up to £1000.00 if they lose it or do not keep their info up to date. Talk about masochism.
Personally, I think this whole exercise is aimed at identifying the "seriously delusional" members of society so they can ship them off to the UK version of the FEMA camp.
Coz you would be mad to fall for this crap............

It'll become compulsory through stealth - it wouldn't be long before they announced that no, you don't HAVE to have one - BUT you won't be able to access A, B or C without one (a passport for example)

Hell, over here you have to have a form of Id if you want a job,or social security, anything really. If you write a check for groceries, you must have a valid ID. We use it for everything over here. If you haven't got enough gas money to pay for what you already pumped, you have to give your ID or driver's linseed to the cashier, so they can hold it in case you run. BTW, gas is Pre-pay over here now.Too many drive offs. We use our ID or driver's license for everything, you have to have it.It's the law! If you want to buy a gun you must have it to apply for a license for that as well. No felonies though. They don't get to own guns.

It's voluntary... like BNP's repatriation proposal ;)
Lets hope the good peeps of Manchester send a clear message. However I get the feeling there will be quite a few takers for this card over the trail time period.

They're playing the same trick that they do all the time. They claim it's "not compulsory", but actually, if a decent number of people get an ID card, it will become the standard, and therefore, will be mandatory. These politicians are complete scum. And if you're wondering: no, voting for the Tories will not save you from this.
