In a SPIEGEL interview, Chris Anderson, the editor in chief of US technology and culture magazine Wired discusses the Internet's challenge to the traditional press, new business models on the Web and why he would rather read Twitter than a daily newspaper.
SPIEGEL: Mr. Anderson, let's talk about the future of journalism.
Anderson: This is going to be a very annoying interview. I don't use the word journalism.
SPIEGEL: Okay, how about newspapers? They are in deep trouble both in the United States and worldwide.
Anderson: Sorry, I don't use the word media. I don't use the word news. I don't think that those words mean anything anymore. They defined publishing in the 20th century. Today, they are a barrier. They are standing in our way, like a horseless carriage.

Some sites and groups and organizations rely on donations. Some are donations welcome. Some are contribute if you can. Some are donations not needed at the moment. It just depends on the needs of the non traditional news journalist. Many sites have links that make money via the ads. Many independent news writers who have no relation to the site (volunteers) who contribute a lot of time and effort reporting on the news so mr Chris Anderson can get it his way shouldn't be cut out of the equation. Its kind of the same thing as people having land phone lines then switching to cell phone lines. No one really got cut out of the equation, only migrated. News outlets are the same. How else would you hear of your favorite non traditional news journalist to follow in the first place had you not started getting the information from somewhere else. Maybe upgrade is the word I am describing. Getting news from the traditional outlets is becoming slow. Many of the stories are not properly fact checked. An independent news outlet (not traditional outlets such as newspaper.com but another outlet) improved on the service that newspaper.com was providing and fact checked it through many sources then Mr. Chris Anderson views the information. Should the new independent news outlet journalist be cut out of the equation for what started as a hobby b/c Mr Chris Anderson doesn't want to pay anyone anything and he works for the industry. Many people will gladly contribute if they find their author providing quality work consistently. Mr. Chris Anderson do you think that if no one ever got paid anything via donations, news outlets in general, etc. the independent news outlets (owners) should reap the money due to ads but the independent news journalist that check and post so you can view the news should not just because you are against paying anything? Some hobbies are jobs. What turns out to be a hobby turns out to need to be continued. What if for your hobby which is providing a decent service which could be improved if donations were collected to encompass server upgrades or faster internet pipes? Just because Mr. Chris Anderson thinks that regardless donations from him won't be going anywhere and he wants to hear the news, I guess he would be called a free rider since he can't see the reason for donations to keep the project going. Kind of strange considering he works in the industry. What about if all the donations that were collected go into upgrades to improve the service & not to someones own pocket? Sounds like Mr. Anderson likes putting money in his pocked. If no one got paid, how do you have your job which is I am guessing not a hobby? Oh yes there it is, its a job, not a hobby. You started it as a job and in the end it is a job. If you start a project as a hobby, you more than likely like what you are doing. Sometimes it grows & sometimes it doesn't. Hobbies can help people or have no impact. Independent news journalist would go under the helping people section and if joe could donate $5 to get independent news journalist whatever that Mr. Anderson likes to read on twitter, I don't see a problem with it. I guess if it was up to Mr. Anderson, that extra $5. would stay in his pocket and Mr. Anderson would be left wondering why he didn't hear that tweet. I guess its getting where the news eats itself. Had the independent news journalist had that $5 , he may be faster at delivering that tweet than without that $5, even often times beating the msm.
