when you type into google, "sag deg" in quotation marks, as i do in order to get all the links possible with the exact phrase "sag deg".

now, it isnt a very common searh term you would think right?... but when i type it into google there are 1170 hits.

naturaly, i would never dream of going through all the sites when there are 1170 hits... and it makes me feel like, wow, i guess there are already enough people who know about it; i guess i don't have to strive so hard to get the infomation out there about it, since others obviously know that it is there sine there are 1170 sites talking about it...

but guess what:

for fun, i started clicking to the end of the hits, and re clicking... and it only goes to 185....

it only goes to 185? and not 1170?... And when you get there to the final page, it says there are 185, not 1170.

now, beause of this, i will look at every possible site to do with "sag deg".

i wonder how many others are fooled into thinking that there is just too much info out there to go through it all.

and guess also what?...

why does google do it?...

why do you think google advertises a false amount of sites on search returns?

I wouldn't bother. Google does this with every searched phrase. There reaches a point where the web page links are just repeats of ones that have gone before and are omitted so that you get more unique results. Google will also give you the option of displaying the omitted links at the end of the search string.

You sure you aren't just getting confused between the number of results and the number of pages? There are several results on each page.

No doubt, the Google search algorithm is already vastly complicated, and it also needs to remain fast enough to produce search results within a fraction of a second, so in a case like you mentioned it is fairly safe to assume that the algorithm uses some heuristics to estimate the total number of pages found rather than the precise number which might be too computationally costly to compute at the moment.

Google's servers don't bother to generate the full list of search results, there's no point when most people only look at the first page. The number of search results is an extrapolation based on the number of hits and misses generated while creating the first page, and multiplying that ratio by the size of the full database.

Basically:

I've generated 20 search results, and I had to search 16% of the database to find them.

From that, you can divide 20 by 16% to estimate that searching the entire database would yield 125 results.

It may be more, it might be less, but its somewhere around there.

If you are not Dave Gorman already - I would ask him. He would probably make a show about it. (search him under googlewhacking)

also consider that "sag deg" might mean something in a foreign language.

just heard from my mother, a person from Google or something was at their house... saying the over hang on the front of the house made it difficult for them to know where the front door was, because the over hang is long.

the person was taking measurements of the front of the house and everything

i was like holy crap.. "and you didn't run him off"?

she told me my dad was talking with the person asking about the 'cool' machine he was using to do the measurements.

said, it all had to do with taxes or something.
